I bet most of them will, if not try the cable news channels. It will be a waste of time. The candidates will n ot adress anything in a serious way and I expect them to say crap like...

"education is good"
"I like puppies"

If folks rely on these "debates" to form an opinion as to who they should vote then they are better off not voting at all.

There are plenty of other ways to understand which side of the issues each candidate comes down on. Both have “records”, websites and literature etc. The voting public ought to take a little more responsibility in deciding who they want for a leader then simply turning on CNN or Fox.

If they rely on scripted events like conventions, commercials, news sound bites or "debates" to decide who they should vote for they wont be making an informed decision.  Lazy people shouldn’t vote.

These "debates" have something like 30+ page long contract. I suspect anything that might possibly cause trouble for either candidate has been negotiated away..

For example in the 2000 debates Al Gore did a terrible job, in part because of his arrogant attitude, body and facial gestures seen during Bush's responses. So this year one of the parties demanded that cameras only show the candidate who is speaking at the moment not both candidates.  Plus I heard that the candidates arte not allowed to question each other directly.

So... Its not really a debate.. Its more of a moderated pre arranged joint press conference by both candidates..

Strange system. Over here the PM gets questioned by the opposition every Wednesday. Blair has tried to water it down, and has succeeded in shortening it, but at least you get to see some direct questioning at Blair by the other parties.

That’s all theatrical nonsense.

Facial gestures?

As I said if folks base their decision to elect the most powerful leader in the world on facial gestures then we would all be better off if they just didn't vote at all.

BTW since the League of Women Voters stopped sponsoring the debates in 1988 there has been a similar "list" for each debate there after. Just this year both parties agreed to make the "list" public for the first time. It’s only "news" now because the talking heads can hold the piece of paper up while they roll their eyes and pretend how ridiculous the current "list" appears.

The debates arent part of the political system. They are negotiated between the 2 parties irrespective of the "government". The 2 parties set the rules. As such dont expect to ever see a 3rd party candidate get invited to one. Bush Sr. learned his lesson from Perot.

There's no legal requiremnt that candidates debate at all. But if you look at the larger picture the entire campaigns on both sides is just one grand debate. There's no need for these "sitcoms".

I couldn't imagine Bush surviving alot of direct questions in the way Blair does. He seems to get pretty confused and starts to mumble when even the press ask a few questions. Probably why he avoids such situations.

The only thing I figure you can learn from this is how well each of them can lie.
