One hell of a Dogfight (film) Camo v Hang
« on: October 15, 2000, 11:16:00 AM »
Camo and I had an opportunity to do a little 1v1 over the canyons Saturday afternoon.

This fight was a pisser.. verts; scissors; E and B&Z all the way to T&B in the ditch. A white knuckle fight; with both of us trading angles for shots several times. They don't get any better than this...

We got into it pretty much co-e and co alt at around 15k. He's flying a 109F w/the three 20's at half a tank; I have my Trusty Pony at 1/2 tank w/ 6 .50's. He's turning better than I've ever seen any 109 turn; and his vertical manuvers are textbook.. I'm JUST barely able to keep him close enuff though the zooms to keep his nose off me.. till he lands a 20mm round in my oil cooler.

Grab the film and see how it comes out.. a nail-biter; every second.

Hairball slept under the couch.

Looks like a ballet chess match... move; counter, reverse; counter, on; and on and on.. watch how Cammo always has his lift vector pointed right on me.. those canopy to canopy rolling scissors were fediddlein awsome.

Both planes were flyin right on the edge of their respective envelopes. No room for even the slightest mistake. Watched it again this morning about 5 times... man; Cammo can FLY that G2! Lordy; he's good.

i want to see camo's film ....but i noticed in Hangs film that he forgot the alt-r  .
i wanted to see how hard Hangs 51 got hit when he started smoking. 109 looks to be a tuff bird. It took 4 hits and 3 out of the 4 looked like he was hit in the right wing.

Good fights guys keep them comming.

Great fight guys!

Turn trails on and look behind.  Several times there are textbook diagrams drawn in the sky.

Very interesting fight.  Hang starts with a fairly flat turn that would have been suicide had he not been at 300 Mph at the time.  As it was, he seems to gain the upper hand from the start.

About 1/3'rd of the way in, Camo gets a nice rolling scissors going and forces the overshoot.  Hang flat turns back to him and gets smoked for it.

It looked like Camo's best shot was the rolling scissors, he seemed to gain whenever he got those working right.  A couple of times Camo keeps rolling and eases off the pull too much and gets smoked for it.  A great battle.

Classic guys.  Very nice.    A big <S> to both of you.

Hang, once in a while you come across a good pilot and have a damn good fight. Watched both of your films while sittin back smokin a Cuban cigar and a nice cold beer. Always watch film at least once from cocpit view, and agian from F4 view.

I ran into a great fight with a 109 in me Typhoon. Not only a great fight but good sportsmanship. Flying close to his field,he never once tryed to drag me to Ack, also i think he called off the 2nd 109,Spit and F4U right up until the end.

Ill post this film, keep an eye on my Tiffy close to the end of the film, i stalled her at 200ft trying to get the lead on the 109,i managed to recover at 50ft off the deck. I dont think the real thing coulda done that.

Those are two very good films! I only wish I had the view management skills to keep track of the bandit like these two guys have.

I was surprised by how the fight appears from one plane versus the other. I watched it from the 51's perspective the first time (both internal and external views). It seemed to me, particularly in the latter part of the fight, that the 51 remained behind the 109's 3/9 line. The 109 defense looked to be a spiral with the 51 in a lag chase position.

But then I looked at the 109 film...and much to my surprise, it showed the 51 in the 109's front quarter...the spiral that I had seen at first now looked much more like a series of rolling reversals.

I was also impressed by the 109's ability to keep the 51 in sight when the 51 went to its six. There were many times when I tried every view and could not keep the 51 in sight...if I had been in the fight, I would have been a goner!

Nice flying, guys!

Andy

Hey Hang, looks like we got an audience here. Maybe we should start doing this on a regular basis and start selling tickets?

RWY:  When I typed "lol" Hang had just taken out my left elevator.  And yes, I got lucky - I think Hangtime pinged me on 3 occasions before I got his oil.  But then I got careless and let him too close.

Rgr that Camo.. saw light hits 3 of the 4 times I squirted at yah. All short snapshot bursts as we crossed. Wasn't till I snagged yer elevator that I did any serious harm to yer 109. Tuff little bird; legend has it.

On the other hand, it only took one cannon hit from you to put the pressure on somethin fierce.. no way the pony was gonna absorb any more of that! Not too many places on a Mustang you can hit with cannon fire without doing terminal damage. If that lone 20mm round had impacted about 10 inches further forward; it woulda been my coolant; a foot or two to the right or left, a wing...

Yep; I'd sure like to fly more missions like that one..  even tho furballs are a blast and I sure enjoy the pounding adrenaline of a 4 or 5 plane furball in the weeds, what with trading off targets, massive SA overloads, instinctive knife-fighting free-for all's... Mindless joy.   Of course; my pony rarely lives long in that kind of fight. Still it's fun as hell and MA dweebery is it's own reward. Instant gratification.

But there's a special thrill to a long CAP ride; stalking that dot; the joy of the chase (RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!) and then engaging 1 on 1 in clean uninterupted sword fight, riposte and parry, where you have no distractions beyond the target and the terrain, where you get a chance to really probe the opposition and to test his plane and his luck against yours in a furious duel. You and the other guy; thats all. And thats always enuff.

<S!> again Camo. Heluva shot; heluva fight!
