I used to own a Toyota Landcruiser when I worked in the oil business in Indonesia.
Very tough and good to go through mud. But a very uncomfortable ride and noisy. The mileage was pretty bad too but it made up for that with a pretty big gas tank.
I drove mine from middle of Sumatra to Jakarta and back many times and once around the whole of Java. I probably put 100,000 km on it with all my travels and it never broke down although it probably had 200,000 on it when I got it. I don't know because the original odometer was not working.
I had it restored and used it for 2 years before I sold it for more than I had invested it it.
They are tough and good offroad but they handle like crap. They also have one mean massive front bumber that is basically a piece of steel that sticks out 8" from the front of the car. Great for making crazy Indonesian drivers from cutting you off. No one cuts of a Landcrusier and gets away scott free.
