Boy wont we all love it when a 30k buff sinks the carrier!
« on: October 15, 2000, 08:26:00 PM »
Hi

Seeing how accurate the bombers are from 20 or 30k maybe even good enough to hit single tanks how hard will it be for them to hit the 800foot long carriers? This is not a buff whine in general but I think its a serious issue to deal with when 105 comes out. In real life the level bombers had a terrible time hitting a moving ship, thats why even the bettys used torpedos vs shipping, remember in Sakai's book when he was mad they took bombs vs torpedos to attack the US ships. Anyway does anyone else share this concern or am I looney?

thanks GRUNHERZ

you guys heard about the tirpitz? Lancaster specials dropped 12,000lb cookie's from high altitude and blew the crap out of it

buffs are totally ineffective against moving tanks even at low altitude.

but the odds of hitting that big carrier are better
Fester was my in game name until September 2013

Tirpitz was standing still in a Fjord and it took a bunch of lancs on several different attacks to sink it. My point was moving ships were almost impossibe to hit by hi level bombers, thats why dive and torpedo bombers were used in that task.

First, carriers move fast.
Second, from altitude you're gonna have to lead the boat a bit.  That means flying along the direction of travel of the CV, and dropping ahead of the ship.  It will take a good deal of experience nad skill to predict the amound of lead necessary, and if that ship turns, you've missed with the whole bombload.
So, I'm sure you'll find a few CV level-bombing "specialists", but for the rank and file, it'll be way too difficult compared with other techniques, so I wouldn't worry.

Oh yeah, and torpedoes below the waterline.

Just model aerodynamic forces (wind, drag, etc) on the bombs.  Add in a little random dispersion (turbulence?) too.

In That "other" sim, i usually led the CV by one CV-length and then unloaded all the eggs. pretty explosions

Better be up high, and watch out for those 88's, there's a lot of them.

Oh: forgot to mention: Whomever sets the CV's Waypoints better make it zigzag all the way, makes it a LOT harder to bomb

Torpedos are used because they are much more devastating then an equivelent weight of bombs(unless you get lucky and they are refueling or rearming ala midway.

The carriers will have to automatically start to dodge when a buff is over head in AH or the current system will lead to them bing easy meat.

I suppose they could make ships invulnerable to any bomb not delivered by a dive bomber..
That would be more realisic in effect then allowing the level bombers to hit them but would probably raise some hackles.

I remember some stories about the mens who were bombing ships, told that bombs can bounce off the armour of a ship

HTC will just have to make sure the sea has windy conditions   . I would hate to be one of the pilots shooting a trap in there, just whan the `player' who set CG waypoints causes the carrier to zig or zag!

Grunz..

What makes you think CV will be static? It would take a lot of damn practice to sink a CV thats moving and trying to sink it from 30k?

I dont think so!!

Dog out..

Every fly Warbirds? Buffing there and here is pretty much the same. How many times can you remember anyone taking out the CV in a buff? I practiced offline till my eyes were bugging out of my head, not only was it boreing it was damn near impossible. And 1 lucky hit didnt seem to do much in the line of damage.
They made it work before, I know they can do it again, only better this  time.

My CO in WB ]-[onker aka Condor could kill a CV with a B-17G 100% of the time.  And the WB bombsight is harder to use than the AH bombsight.

Funked..

Condor has allway spent 98% of his WB air time in a buff.I dont think there is any dedicated buff pilots here that will spend 100% of the air time in buff just to learn to kill CV. But i could be wrong

WD I have learned to never underestimate the power of dweeb.  If there is a way to do something brilliantly devious with the weapons in one of these games, somebody will figure it out, perfect it, and teach others.
