What to send Troops?

Mark "Stric9" Davis, My former College Roomate, Former Aces Higher, New Dad and My Best Friend, is serving with the 10th Mountain in Iraq. Thats brings the total of my personal friends to four serving in Iraq, seems like they just keep dissapearing.



Mark is on the left, and well the skinny red head is me. This picture was taken at Mick Mcquires in Market Square, Pittsburgh when I graduated, in June 2003.

A while back he sent me some emails, I replied, but he didn't. So we wrote his new wife. His wife sent me some photo's of his new baby. And his address in Iraq.

So me and my Girlfriend, are going to send him a care package, with my old CD player and some tunes, some phone cards, a deck of cards, and some candy. We were wondering what else we could send him.

Anybody else send care packages over there? What should we avoid sending? How long does it take to get there? Any advice will certainley appreciated, If you would like I could send him some of your thoughts and words of advice.

baby wipes
dip
cigs
booze once he tells you best current way to sneak it to him
dvds if hes got access to a player
high carb high sugar stuff that tastes good and doesnt spoil easy brownies are a good example they can be ground up and put in coffee

im about a year out of the loop and the guys in iraq have decent facilities they can rest up at or theyve had time to get some stuff in the field to make things more "like home". best way is to write or email him and ask him exactly what he needs. when you drop him a line ask him if he needs anything from blackhawk or uscav also. a backup or replacement gear from them can really cure some headaches.

almost forgot. the dip and cigs send even if he dont use them. hell use them in trade. and if you can get a "photo cube" its a little plastic cube maybe inch and a half to a side that you slide photos on all the faces of cube under the plastic. have his wife put some picutres of wife and kid and the guys parents in the cube. its small enough you can stuff it in a ruck without it getting hurt or in the way. guys with wife and kids seem to like those.

My Marine friend seconds the Baby Wipes.  If you can get them in small pouches (eg, send lots of them that are in their own little packets like parents use when they're out and about during the day) then he can trade them (worth gold in the dust) for goods.

the gorillas always find a new way to get the bannanas buddy. for a long time tootpaste tubes worked for booze. in afghanistan we had good luck with two liter bottles of nestea loaded up with whiskey and resealed. im sure the guys are spending about as much time figuring out how to get booze as to get the enemy. :) also when worst comes to worst get an excuse to hook up with the germans or the brits if you really need a fix.

Baby wipes with aloe saved my bellybutton in the field more times than I can remember  LITERALLY!

Those things are heaven when you havnt showered in a couple of weeks.

If he doesnt have one leatherman/gerbers are like gold.  

A collection of old Maxims and FHM magazines would be a nice touch as well.

Basically try to go through your day and think of everything you use or do but think nothing of it.  Those are the things you miss the most.  

Trimming your fingernails or shaving with your K-Bar knife isn't bad but having clipers and good razors just makes your day.

The dirt and sand in Iraq is like a fine talcom powder.  It gets into everything and coats everything.  Babywipes help you clean yourself.


Also,  Sometimes all you have to take a dump in is a hole in the ground or an old grenage box with a hole cut in it.  The MRE paper towels they give you are dry and scratchy.


Showers in the field can sometimes be few and far between.  One of my good freinds told me he wore the same clothes for 3 weeks strait....the only time he got to clean himself was a field shower.

That consists of taking a damp cloth (or baby wipe) and washing off your Face pits croch and butt (in that order)

When all you know is dirt babywipes just give you that clean feeling over a damp towel.

Preperation H, cause your but can get sore when your wiping with cardboard..

i sent quality beef jerky

of course baby wipes..

and if you can send them in the individual packets..20 or so in a package..

I realize if you send the big boxes of wipes they tend to dry out by the time you get to the bottom of the box

I'm sure he'll be ecstatic to get my care package.

I can't wait till he gets home so we can throw back a few beers, and talk about the great times we had in college!

Some of the fellas from my old squad (325th Checkertails) chipped in and sent me a care package last year. My favorite items were the frisbee and the aviation magazines. Beef jerky is always a crowd pleaser. Add to this the regular letters and postcards.

What meant the most to me was that I have never met any of these gentlemen IRL. guys..I'm still grateful for the little things. It made a big difference for me.
