Why bomb?
« on: October 05, 2004, 11:26:23 PM »
You attack a base with lancs...and auger..say nothing about RTB and by the time you return with more bombers, your previous targets are regenerated...even if you came in on the deck without getting alt. WHy do hordes form? Because it takes one to keep a base down. Frantic flying..yuck.

i had a great bombing run today.

started 60 miles behind the front line, take off, auto climb with rpms down a tad and went to make some coffee and food.

came back 10 mins later, i was at about 9k and still 15 mins from target. i reajust course for a second, auto climb and commence eating. whilst eating i peruse the roster and look at various ranks and squads. nice to keep up to date with who you're saving/killing/being saved by.

finish my food and coffee is drinking temperature. nice. light a smoke and sip coffee whilst deciding on a target for my load. i decide on the fighter hangers.

twelve minutes later and i jump in the bomb sight and begin to calibrate. Yes dweebs, there is a bomb sight!!! for aiming from altitude!!! ingenious. anyhow, i calibrate and set throt/rpm and wait for the base to come into view. two minutes later i get my first burst of archie(WW1 slang - puffy ack) I am now at 15,955k.

the base comes into view and i  line up for the first cluster of hangers. the base is a large one, and i cannot close it all down with 6x1000lbs in this B17. so i figure i'll just salvo 1 on each hanger till i run bingo.

Bombs away!  what a sight, a single salvo of 3 bombs whistle away from beneath my LEVEL flying beast from 15 THOUSAND feet.

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeee!

30 seconds later they strike the first hanger and its down.

what fun!

i make a seriously lazy turn from the bombsite view to enable me to drop again without calibrating. 6 mins later im on target again, I have a change of heart. this time i'll cluster the FH/BH zone with all 15 remaining bombs.
getting ready, nearly.....nearly....

*PING....PING....P-P-PING SSSSSWWWW pwiiiiiinnnnnow!*

i jump in rear gun in shock and see my attacker. I blast the hell out of a tempest 100 off my tail. he gets my left drone and along with many pings of 50cal, he drives right into the wreckage of the falling plane.  kill #1 for 1

 bombsite!

get in and almost instantly have to drop. bombs fall long but i get one FH and one BH. not bad.

-------------------------------------
BatFink: Xpilot, sorry about your temp

Xpilot: bat, i hit ya damn wreckage. DOH!

Batfink: totaly off gaurd in bombsite ya blighter, lol

xpilot: fair trade though? lol

bf: yup! lol

-------------------------------------

for 13 mins i slowly circle while decending, and start towards my home base, but decide that i need more kills and halfway i turn back for the enemy base at 6k.

the base is capped and they are working the town.

a pony tries to bounce me at terrific speed, but i rip off his wing from the tail gun but he gets my main fuel and my elevators in my lead plane. i must eject into my last bomber.  kill #2 for 2

6 mins later and im out of fuel, i glide down and make a perfect landing on the de-acked enemy base, finishing my run, inch perfect, in the indestructable hanger.

i wait for 25 mins as the battle rages on, one of my squaddies takes out the only ack that can see me when it pops. mate!

in the end we capture the field and i land 2 kills. whole mission duration approx: 50 mins

IMO this is how a bombing run should be, preferably with 4 or so wingmen and an escort. Maybe rtb'ing would be more realistic but not possible for me today, the base was capped and i was hungry for blood!

in this time a otd dive bomber could do about 10 pork n auger missions.

i believe i got the satisfaction from what i did though. the P'n'A guy cant get much.

but, whatever floats ya boat. different blokes, different strokes.

i must say, i like taking off from my base in a fighter and getting 3 instant proxxies before flipping the ignition :rofl

have fun all

Yes i love hi alt bombing...but unless you have alot of friendlys...cap...goons etc..it doesnt do much for long. Most times they are back up before you rtb. And how often have you seen it where you kill the FHs and people lose interest and leave...only to have FHs regen and kill the goon? I know its a teamwork game, but the timing is rarely good enough unless you overwhelm it.

Too bad there arent factorys that we could bomb that affect the ENY limiter in relation to bombs dropped on it. Like if 20 1000lbs drop on it, it sets ENY to 10 for 1/2 hr...if 40 put on it then its ENY 20 for 1/2 hr an so on.

that is a seriously GREAT idea! i have heard the factory idea before, but if it changed ENY that would be great!

hope HT sees this or hears of this idea.

mostly in bombing, unless on a propa mission i just love trying to hit my target from alt, and then shooting a couple of guys down on the way home.

you're right, its a shame most captures are from gangbanging.

our squad likes to do NOE raids on obscure bases for captures. we have taken fields with anywhere upwards of 3 guys flying, as im sure others have too.

wasnt there a guy who used to take fields on his own?? he had two accounts and flew the goon in behind his buffs!! lol. that watermelon is great!

Sometimes its just fun to just bomb from high alt with large group,
no matter if we end up capturing the base or not.

Yeah but Thursday at 10 pm Eastern is no good for people like me who live in the UK/Europe - at least FiLtH's bomber mission was on a Friday night, a bit earlier, so that I was able to take part.  :p  :)

I have discovered a fondness for bombing.  Runs like Mechanic decribes are why I bomb.  Great fun.
