Is...

The field ack!

This stuff is amazing, it can:
  • Shoot at absolutly a flat arc = no trajectory at all
  • Shoot through any building
How can this AAA when shooting at ground vehicles shoot so flat.  The laws of physics are broken beyond belief.

Actually, from a game stand point I can understand the perfectly flat trajectory, in respect to the AI required to shoot accuratly.

But...

Please, at least prevent it from shooting through the buildings.  While at the same time the building prevents the player from killing the ack.

Thanks!

Agree.  Ack sucks.  No arcing of rounds!  Shoots through buildings!

HT was on the other day... someone axed him why ack could shoot him if he's behind a hangar.  Response:  "Because I designed it that way."

Why?

I see it as a balance issue for gameplay, if it was any less lethal, you might as  well call the game "Aces Vulch".

Not to speak for HT, but...

...tongue-in-cheek!

Is it possible he may be saying it was something overlooked, and not a purposeful attempt to discourage players?

Once someone asked Pyro when they would make a B-25. His answer?

"Never. I hate them."

It was a joke, but of course the player didn't see it that way.

Well It does take alot more code to have the ack behave realisically then to have it behave the way id does.
Aiming AI is simpler, no reload, dont calculate los problems..
Lets say it takes HT 35 hours to do that and get it all tested and tweaked.
Where do we take 35hrs out of the game we have?
And then of course the game has to be re ballanced to maintain game play.
Maybe the revetments that ack are really placed in are present now so the first burst of 50cal doenst kill them......
Maybe they move a different location when they spawn and dont have their white aiming circle anymore...

Like I said, I understand the flat trajectory from the code required in the AI.  It is just this, and the ack's ability to shoot through buildings that suspends belief.

I was hoping only to get the ability for the ack to shoot through buildings modified so that it could not do so.

Thanks!

I remember HT saying something in the context of "Sometimes the things that seem like they would be tough to code are actually easy, and visa versa..."

I'll bet the visa-versa would apply here, possibly bordering software limitations..

HTC, tell me I'm wrong.

Erm.. we are arguing realism in an unrealistic situaion.

Ack used to not be able to shoot through buildings.  People used that to drive into a hangar and vulch aircraft while being extremely difficult to hit unless the VH came back up (can't shoot through buildings with aircraft either).

Some unrealistic features on behalf of AI are tradeoffs to prevent even more unrealistic behavior by players.  You always know how the AI is going to act.. you never know how the players are going to manipulate that.

As it is right now, a single fighter can make multiple passes on ack.  A good fighter pilot can take down all ack at a field.  Read anything in regards to WWII tactics (or any other war for that matter) pertaining to making multiple low level passes on a target.

I'm sorry if the ack (at an enemy field) gets in the way of you hanging out there for an extended period of time.  But... well... that's why its there.  Get over it.

As far as I know, making acks not shoot thru buildings should be a hard thing to do without making players shoot at other friendly players and not killing them.

Months ago, (after we 1st got panzers)
I asked HT why aaa could shoot thru buildings, and if it was going to be "fixed"

His Response was "NO"

When I asked him why, his reply was..
"it would cost to much in time and effort, would make the code bulky, and is not a high priority"

After thinking about it, I agreed..  still do..

I dislike the aaa shooting thru buildings..
but then again I dislike friendly collisions off, dislike friendly fire off, and dislike everyone on opposing teams shooting me down with great regularity..
I also dislike mutiple planes\vehicles spawning on exact same spot, (unless I
happen to be vultching them)

I don't recall ack NOT shooting thru buildings, many the time my panzers engine would be killed by aaa while sitting in a hangar..

'course the aaa wasn't able to kill a panzer at that time, think thats what you actually remember AKDeJaVu

And friendlies couldn't bomb thru their own hangars either... Many the time I sat in a Hangar plinking poor unfortunates.. (most of whom died trying to kill me, rather than me actually shooting them..)

I'd much rather see the time needed to fix the AI, to be used for more planes, more terrain, (hint! hint! ROADS & BRIDGES), ships, torpedoes, great graphics that would need to accomplish those.. than stopping AI shooting thru buildings.

It was just one simple little request.  Gee Willickers, don't make it so darn complicated.

However; I do see one downside I had not forseen.  This being the ability of a a hostile plane or vehicle to hide in your hanger immune from the ackm which is  only 200 feet away outside the hanger.  I generally play the game straight up and the loophole was not immediately apperant to myself.

Flame On!
