ATI X800 or GeForce 6800 Ultra
« on: June 07, 2004, 06:43:40 PM »
Is anyone using either the ATI Radeon X800 Pro/XT or NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra? Or does anyone know if HTC has tested these in the AHII video engine?

My Geforce 6800 rocks on every game except Aces High when we are on a large map.  EVERY other game I get blistering performance.

I'm waiting for the ATI shader 3.0 card to come out next year, personally. The 6800 Ultra is beaten on all benchmarks involving AA by the X800 PE, and looking at the thing, the design of the thing isn't very elegant. Too noisy and too power hungry.

Take a look at the 6800GT before you buy.  It's the same as a 6800 Ultra but clocked a bit slower because it uses a smaller heatsink and quieter fan.  Some people with good case cooling are able to run their 6800GTs at Ultra speeds, but of course you might cook your card for what turns out to be only a moderate increase in speed.

The 6800GT blows away the ATI cards sold at that price point ($350-$400), but you should check out benchmarks that use the games you play.  In particular, farcry seems to have some problems right now with nvidia cards and the patch to fix it has been delayed for some reason, while a dozen nvidia beta driver updates haven't fixed it either.

For doom3, nvidia cards rock.  That's pretty much undisputed.  For everything else, you really gotta look at some benchmarks you care about.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I have the 6800GT, I'm very happy with it and haven't OC'd it yet.
