just stratred trying to figure this all out...

yeah i missed that early "intardnet" stuff.

anyone use this alot? what is better? Forte agent or Xnews?

how in the heck do you find stuff LOL

i know, i hear about people DL illegal stuff.. i just want to understand this whole thing. im not looking for what it is good for besides that. there must be some reason it is clouded in seceracy, noone discusses it, but there are millions of "posts" or whatever you call them.
I don't know what to put here yet.

It's not clouded in secrecy... it's "old school".

If you want to use your browser to use it, try this:

http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q=

or

Most ISP still offer access (I think) to newsgroups... create the account in "Outlook Express" and access it there.

Other than bigweek, I haven't used usenet in years. At one time it was a big portion of the net, but with all the web based boards, I rarely use it anymore.

I think outlook express works fine for usenet groups, but at one time Forte Agent and Forte Free agent was THE news reader.

Don't use usenet.  Usenet doesn't exist.  Forget you ever heard the word.  Usenet who?

What do you mean its clouded in secrecy? Millions of people use the usenet newsgroups every day. There's thousands and thousands of active newsgroups where people discuss all possible topics, aviation included. And it is international, owned by nobody, available everywhere.

even in the "clients" i have DL's they say:
we are only going to explain the new features, we assume you know all the basics, and what the terms mean.
I don't know what to put here yet.

JB, just go to Forte's website and get Agent for free. When yoiu install it, it will ask you for the name of your news server and mail server. You can find these on the info page of yur ISP, search for 'news server' if it isn't obvious.

After you put in those two server names Agent will ask you if you want to go online to get the list of available news groups. You may have to put in a user name and password, these are typicaly the same as your login for your ISP.

Agent, or a dedicated newsgroup reader, is the best way to use the usenet since Outlook will not decode Yenc without a patch/program added on.

You should have 30k+ newsgroups to choose from. Using Agent's search function, just input a topic of interest like 'binaries aircraft' and you can find what groups are available through your ISP. Then just hit the subscribe button and that group will show up in your 'subscribed groups' list.

I could tell you which groups have the best porn but our tastes are probably very different, I'm not into whips and chains anymore.
