I believe the only pic's of Japanese witches is gonna be in a mask .  try "Japanese mask "/"Japanese costume" or something along those lines for your seach .

Anime is modern art . befor that they were always displayed in masks .

(I'm not much into collecting/studying the Japanese craft .. but ive extensively studied European /American/Romanian witches over the years. My library has books that date back to the 1700's )

Perhaps a Japanese scholar will step in and enlighten us .

I'd look for kabooki (or however it's spelled) theatre stuff.

Wild characters, makeup and outfits there.

Thank you.
British Museum (big on Japanese & Egyptian gear), the Louvre (a ways from Luxembourg, I know, but it has that Mona Lisa and the woman with no arms, and the French Impressionists were very into Japanese stuff), local art museum catalogues would be a good start.

I know nothing about japanese art other than the famous woodblock stuff - Ando Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai's famous waves. But here's a push off point for a a cut & paste google frenzy: http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/tl/japan/edo.html

More modern stuff: no anime means that Hayao Miyazaki's "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Spirited Away" are out — both feature witches. You could try the odd and slightly disturbing Yoshimoto Nara, who may well have his spooky little girls dressed up like witches here and there. But that's about it for my "Japanese witches in art" knowledge.

On the whole, though (while I'm not very clued up on Japanese culture specifically) witches are really a Western cultural idea tied-in with and promoted by Christianity, so the whole witch thing doesn't translate in Asia very well — they mostly have ghosts and demons covering the witch area. So pickings may be rather slim — it's a bit like asking for pictures of Belgian Samurai.

PS the bottom pic is Chinese, post Communist era judging by the PLA boots that girl's wearing. Inspirational characters read (though more poetically)- "The world is such a huge place, there's always something to work on."

 LOL :D

Thanks for the insight -dead-  I have a memory from my childhood in Japan involving very scary "witches" maybe that is not what they are called. (It's been over 25+ years now...). I remember very fair faced wimin hanging out in the woods with flying fires, speaking stones and such... very spooky. I wish I could remember how they were called.

Have seen most of Miyazaki's animes and find them amazing (Princess Mononoke especially). I found out that very little animes are exported out from Japan, a pity realy... as there is much more to it than "Ken" or "Cobra" like stories.

Stories are always good if they start with a "Mukashi Mukashi..." :)

PS to Straffo: QUAH!

there wasnt any True Witches in Japanese history (as in European/Aboriginal/African type).

They did /do believe in spirits/ghosts , and do have a form of the "Wise women". (this is what has been reinacted in there plays/theater)

I remember an old b/w movie that was about witches made there ,but i can remember the name it was obi k ....  something ,(and based on two evil "stereotyped"European style witches).

Good luck in your search .(if you find anything cool/historical id be interested in studying it also )none of that fluffy bunny wicca stuff ... only traditional .

P,s. Thanks Dead

what kind of stuff are you looking for saintsaw?

There are no 'witches' in Japanese folklore or literature.

You can find a LOT of Japenese art in this website:

http://www.yoursourceinjapan.com/introduction.htm

you can find anything from landscapes to mythological figures (like the one you found of the mask.. i believe its the Shinto storm god Asano if memore serves me right.. pls correct me Fishu :D )

A website that you have to browse for HOURS and drool at the amazing artwork (many styles, chinese and japanese)

 http://www.artelino.com/default.asp

this one is good too
