I fly the pony by some very simple rules, and as long as I stick to them I tend to stay alive  :).

- Stay high, and stay fast.

- Don't ever, EVER do a level turn.

- If low, use speed to keep E anyway and fool the enemy.

- If attacked from above, always turn into the enemy and dive under his nose. That gives him the hardest snapshot imaginable.

- If fired on by ack or pursuers on your 6, roll a good amount, pull briefly on the stick, resume normal flying (i.e. jink a lot, but small ones, to spoil his aim while keeping your E.)

- Did I mention to keep high and fast?  :)

Only thing that I do is try and NOT pull really hard G turns to conserve E.  Often I find that many pursuers will pull harder turns than they need to in attempts to bring their nose in front of you (leading their shots), and will bleed E.  This works against planes like the Mut-tang and other slow accelerators.

Remember that you can make high G sissors at very high speed and get an La-7 off your six instantly.  The hog is more problematic, since all other things being equal, the hog has a slight edge over the 51 in a good pilots hands.

Wow guys.
I allways read your posts writing about angels 15 to 18 but......really do u fight at that altitude.

Do u really spend 15 mins to gain your combat alt, probably spray your weapons in 10 secs max firing, and then others 15 mins to come back to home from angels 20???????

If i stay at angels 10 u must come down to fight with me or u will observe the panorama from that altitude and then will go home quietly.

And if u come down from 18k to 10k i think much of your E is voted to compression drag then voted to be lost.

I think the rule vs speed and high fighters is TO STAY fast and slow so they cann't dive under u but pull up before cross your path.

That's what simhq.com manuals sayd and i tryed it is correct.

Bye

When flying ponies the 412th regularly climb up to 25k to enter a fight.  We will often engage lower bandits and if you are careful you can make a pass on a bandit at 10k and zoom back up to around 18-20k.

We do get down and dirty with the ponies but observe strict limits on time engaged and try to keep speed and energy high at all times.  Also, we try to work with wingmen so if you see a 412th'er in a pony, be sure that there are more of us on the way...

As Midnight pointed out, the pony is best flown high and fast.  Feel free to browse the tactics tips on the 412th web page...

There is life up there a 25k Clouds, and a lot of the fights are more intense and enjoyable simply because I have some much more space to manuever, I have a great escape route, there never any mindless furballs and very little la7's and n1k's.

Typhoon at 25k is interesting but do-able.  I mostly find P51's, 109's, P47's, P38's, some 190's, F4U's, buffs and spits.  Notice the absence of any real late war uber planes.

These are the planes i want to fight, Tiffie on the deck can only run or HO imo and I don't like doing either.

Have to disagree with you on that one, on the deck tiffie will be outrun, outturned out everythinged by La7, won't turn with spit, yak, N1K, 202, 205 etc.  Will have to deal with high p51's, 109's, 190's and won't zoom with any of the ones most usually flown.  Any of these high will be instant death.  Basically, the plane is not a A2A fighter, its a ground attack aircraft.

I fly it almost exclusively and have 3.5 K/D ratio in it.  What it does do extremely well is hit hard, dive fast and is imo the best and most stable gun platform in the MA along with the F4U-C.

If you can show me a way to beat an La7, N1K2, Yak or Spit in the Tiffie when they're coalt or higher without running or HO'ing which I'm loathe to do, I'd be extremely interested.
