Guppy, more info on Bostwick colors.

I redid the colors in British insignia blue and British azure blue. Looked better, toned down the plate colors and remained true to the faded photographs shade differences.

Friend over at another board found this quote on a super scale modeling decal site.

"The only 8th AF fighter group not to convert to Mustangs was the 56th. It was also the only unit to fly the fast, but somewhat unreliable P-47M. What sets these Thunderbolts apart from others was that they were camouflaged in some rather interesting colors and schemes. All of the ones on this sheet were painted in Insignia Blue and Azure Blue while the undersides and upper wing leading edges were left in bare metal."

Go figure,  I used the same colors as a test  :) This along with the color plates I think is enough for a decent circumstancial case as to the colors.

Now I have to ressurect a merged PSD.. :D

Thats the tough part with those Ms.  I wish there were better color images to back it up.

Does that mean that RAF insignia blue was just a bit lighter then the insignia blue used by the USAAF as the star and bar sure looks darker.

And is it azure blue which was RAF camo from the Med or PRU Blue which would have been used on RAF recce birds in England?

Or did they mix colors and come up with something completely different? :)

Guppy I think I have a lock.

http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/56thfg-gallery.jsp Good site, LOTS of pics.

While no color photo's are available one of the plates was made at the direction of the pilot himself

"Capt. John C Fahringer. 63rd Fighter Squadron. P-47M 44-21160 UN-F "Devastatin' Deb". Capt. Fahringer was flying this a/c when he downed an Me262 on 5 April 1945. Earlier, on 25 March 1945, Maj. George E Bostwick downed one Me262 and damaged another whilst flying this same a/c. Regretably no photos are available of this one at the moment but details of the markings were obtained from the late Capt. Fahringer by Bob McCormack and Crew Chief Richard Leo"
