Dogs, fall, and shedding.

My lab, who is doing good, seems to be shedding.

Do dogs shed their summer coat to grow a winter one? I gave her a bath and she lost all kinds of hair, and there seems to be a month of dog hair on my bed in like 2 days!

Is this normal??

all animals with fur have 2 coats, a "summer" and "winter" coat.

heck some cats have 4 coats for each season.


yes normal for labs to shed, MAN my buddies lab leaves black junk everywhere.

LOL it is nuts! I just gave the dog a bath and washed my blankets and sheets and in like 2 or 3 days I have so much black lab fur on everything it is just NUTs!

I think I need to vacume the dog!

Labs ought to be comfortable enough sleeping/staying outdoors, but if you raised it to be an indoor dog then you're probably stuck.  You might try training the dog to sleep outside if fur shedding is a problem but then you'd need to pay attention to if the dog starts going psycho due to the change in procedures.  Howling can be a problem if you don't get the dog used to staying outdoors (and keeping reasonably quiet) early enough.

Have a golden retriever here.  before that ,Beagles

Also have 3 cats

Yes its normal.
Get used to it.
On an average week you will probably pick up enough fur to knit yourself a new dog.

Labradors shed to some degree year round. They usually will also "blow their coat" in the spring and fall, when they shed more than normal.

Also dogs can shed a lot in response to some kind of stress, called telogen effluvium.

Almost all dogs shed.  Had a Aussie Shepard/Husky mix that left white fur all over the green carpet.  My best friend has two labs.  They leave fur in drifts.  I keep telling him that we need to start a new fashion trend of dog-hair coats.  We'd make millions.

I have had the dog since it was a pup, and she will be two in november, I just do not remeber shedding this bad.


LOL the dog loves the vacume, it is like a big toy to her.

I noticed my chocolate lab has two different shades of brown.  

In the summer, she turns a really pretty golden brown.  Although it is partly because of the sunshine lightening the tint.  Recently her winter coat has been coming in quite a bit darker than the summer coat.  Really shiney, she has a beautiful coat.  You can easily see the difference as there are a few spots of summer lightness around her shoulders.  

I bathed and brushed her once since she started shedding for the winter coat (weird).  It seems I caught it at the perfect time - her fur is great now.  Her shed cycle must be complete.  When she was in the tub, a lot of hair came out and thats all she needed.

This is the answer, 2-3 minutes every day in the heavy shedding times and once or twice a week "normally". But there'll still be some dog hair around. Cheap price to own a Lab, IMO.
