E-machines was bought by Gateway in March 2004 but supposedly remains a separate line.

If you have a good independent computer store in your area that has a solid track record, you might look into getting a custom machine built to your needs (projected out four or five years, of course).

Otherwise, if restricted to mail order, Dell seems dominant now.

I bought a Dell (ducks for cover) and it's working just fine right now.

I got an Optiplex GX270, and customized it to fit my needs.

I got just about everything maxed out,
2048MB DDR333 RAM
P4 3.20GHz
SATA 7200rpm 120GB Hard Drive
DVD and CD burner/player (2 drives)

The only regret I had buying it was that the best video card offered was a GeForce FX5200 128MB 8xAGP.

So far its been great except a few minor details, but just don't call customer service...

I have an emachines computer- it is a good low end machine. I think that their standards have dropped abit since Gateway bought them. I have a Dell laptop now (and did have 2 old ones), and have had a few dell destops through my company. Frankly, I don't like Dell but it is all the company buys. Dell is not my idea of a great PC.
