The one in front is a photo Recon F5 version of the J model.

First giveaway on an L is the landing light in the leading edge of the left wing.  If it's not there it's not an L.  It could be a very late J but not an L without the landing light there.

Better question-

Why the heck did they paint the photo recon 38s blue? Isn't that akin to waving a sign and saying, "Look! I have a camera, I'm pre-dating an invasion and I need pictures of your defenses. Please, don't shoot at me.:

Why not just paint them the same color as the other 38s to attract less attention?

Photo recce camo was a big deal starting with the Brits and thier early converted Spits.  Lots of studies to show how colors did the job whether it be the high alt blues or the low alt pinks.

US birds had the blue, some used a haze camo that blended blues and eventually they went with no camo.  But the no camo came about around the same time the US Fighters were dropping camo, meaning that the Allies had gained control of the air.

Man I didn't realize I was going to start such an in depth thread!

I was just hoping someone who knew how to make skins, would make a 38 skin! (p.s. I like the blue one :aok )

They skin experts are waiting for the 38 to be redone as the one we have now has too many problems to really be able to skin it well.
