About those 24s
« on: October 29, 2004, 04:29:08 AM »
I spent part of the day off making my own B24 profile template with the idea that maybe I could replicate some of the black and white photos in best guess color with group markings etc for the skinners when the time comes.

I didn't shade the template or get too carried away yet, but i think it might work as I can add nose art, group markings etc as I want.

Here's a 736th BS, 454th BG, 25th AF B24J with fictional nose art, along with a close up of the nose.

Not great, but might make it easier for the skin makers when the time comes.

Doing "Chute the Works" for example would be fairly easy as that's a Vargas Girl on the nose and should be easy to replicate.

Feeling like a kid with a new toy.

This one is a real one from the 63rd BS, 43rd BG.  I had an old AW Squad friend whose Grandfather commanded the 63rd BS, "SeaHawks" later in the war, specializing in night attacks on shipping.

I'll take a crack at it United. I'm having fun avoiding the "honeydo" list on a day off :)

Top profile is the Last RAAF Liberator lost during WW2.  24 Squadron.

Bottom is and RAF Liberator from 356 Squadron named "Daedalus" flying in the CBI

CHUTE THE WORKS
« Reply #8 on: October 29, 2004, 05:04:54 PM »
Took at crack at Chute the Works.  From the photo evidence, there wasn't much in the way of unit markings outside of the three vertical bars on the tail.  No individual number or letter evident in 11th BG B24s

Turns out the nose art was a Petty Girl, not a Vargas Girl.

Not exactly right as I couldn't find a font that fit exactly, but the nose art turned out OK.

The B24s of the 7th AF were unique in having ball mounts in the side windows and in place of the dome in the nose to mount 30 cal MGs.  There was a flat piece of glass with a ball mount on top of the nose in place of the clear dome.

Incredible Guppy.  Thank you VERY much!

Now, all I need to do is get that 24 bitmap file... :)

I have a few other photos than what is on the internet, but nothing on the tail markings or anything to the rear of the wings.

I did just recieve some more info on this bird that I haven't gone through yet.  I'll see if I can get that sorted out as well.

Nice work Guppy35 :aok .   Do you by chance have a profile of the Lady Be Good B24D that went down in Libya in 1943?  Just curious, it was an interesting story and I was just wondering about the plane markings.

No profile of Lady Be Good.  She'd have been similar to one of her Group mates, "Strawberry *****" that is preserved at the USAF Museum.

She wouldn't have had the later group tail markings or the yellow fuselage band, but she had the number 64 in the same place as this one and was also a D model without the nose turret.

This isn't a formation assembly ship, but it is an F7 Photo Recce Liberator of the 24th Combat Mapping squadron.  I have a color photo of this one.  No one is quite sure what the story is behind the paint job.

F7s did start out blue but the dots weren't part of the deal.

I think I've covered a lot of color schemes now :)
