White screen of death in AH
« on: November 05, 2004, 01:09:09 PM »
Ok, same problem I described in this thread,

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=133912

but now I think it's related to AH.  It only happens when I'm playing AH, or after I log out and continue using my computer.  If I haven't played AH since booting, it doesn't happen.  Other games (Empire earth, homeworld 2, IL2 FB) don't cause it.

Sound keeps looping after it happens.

I've tried putting more case fans into my computer.  I've also tried disconnecting fans and my backup HDD to conserve power; still happens.  So I don't think it's a temperature problem, and I hope it's not a power supply problem.

AH has been tough to play lately because of it; I made it about halfway down the runway on my first sortie this afternoon before it happened again.  Usually it doesn't happen for an hour or so, so at least I get some play time in.

Any help would be appreciated.

ed: Sometimes it seems caused by things I do in-game.  Specifically I remember it happening once when I jumped from the tail gunner position to the cockpit, saw a mountain right in front of me, and yanked the stick back to try to get over it.  White screen.  So maybe it's related to some kind of joystick thing?

Sounds almost like the video card is running out of power and shutting down the 3D side.  Newer cards can do this.

What video card is it?

Is the fan on the Ti4200 still running?  And is the heat sink on the video card free of dirt/dust/debris?

Yep, fan's running and the heat sink isn't dusty.  I gave it a hosing with those dust sprayer cans when I was inside installing case fans (thinking it was a heat issue).
