Salute to Octavius
« on: November 09, 2004, 12:26:00 PM »
Last night I was defending one of our bases from a GV attack. I was the sole defender. Attacking our town were a Panzer and an LVT.

I upped my chosen GV killer for this tour, the Stuka. I personally have a problem with upping formations of Lancasters to kill incoming GV's at 1000 AGL. Sure it's much more efficient, and I would have certainly saved the base. But it's just not the kind of gameplay I want to be part of.

On making my way to the town I saw it was 90% down. I went in on the LVT to kill the troop carrier and took him out. It was Octavius. I RTB'b and came back for the Panzer, quickly dispatching him as well. (Kill #19 for my Stuka this month).

RTB again and lifted off with another mother of all bombs. However I was too slow, Octavius had already returned (in an M-3, I assume) and the base was captured from under me.

Octavius then upped in a Hurri I and came after me. It was almost comical as the two slowest planes in AHII merged and went "verticle". We both climbed up in a 100 mph spiral, I was just barely unable to bring my 7.9mms around to bear. Ultimately I stalled out and started to spin, quickly got the nose down and recovered, but Octavius was on my six. There was no way to out-run or out-slow turn a Hurri I and I was quickly dispatched. My only death so far this tour in the Stuka.

I want to commend Octavius. He could have upped a LA-7 or some other uber ride and made it a no contest. Even a Hurri II-C.

But instead he chose to chase down my Stuka in another very early war plane. A plane almost as slow, with only the 303 machine guns. Although our battle was short, it was fun.

This type of play is great. It makes me believe all is not lost in the MA when we have pilots like Octavius who are willing to think about the gameplay, and not just getting the quick kill. He clearly thought about his plane choice before upping. This was his only kill this tour in the Hurri I, so it's not like he's flying it because it's his chosen ride for this month.

Octavius, thanks for a memorable sortie!!

Salute Octavius.  :aok

He shot my Ki-84 down with a C.202 last night.

That may have been my first even death to a C.202.

Gentlemen, this is the kind of gameplay that needs to be heard of more often. MOSQ, thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

Ya know, a little pat on the back once in awhile can go a long way towards changing the antagonistic atmosphere I read about in the MA. T'would be nice to see "kudos" appear regularly in here.

Good work Oct.:)

Now he's trying to make amends with the Hurri gods after sending so many of us to the promised land in his 110 during the BoB.

I have been on a lot with Octavius, and he is an excellent team player too.

Personally, I am the worst fighter pilot in AH, and I would have upped an F-18 after your Stukka if I could have found one. Of course, I probably would have died in your hail of BB's.

:)

Not so, Anchor, on the first part, for that would be me. :D  But I entirely empathize with the last part.

Octavius is a Hacker!
he shot down my Hurri 2d with the main gun of a T34!
I was in like a 70 degree dive too...

He's my squaddie and we roomed together at the 2003 Con.  Perhaps some of his "coolness" rubs off on me?

No?

Aww come on...?

Anyway...FWIW he did win the 1 vs 1 tournament at that Con.

Very good stick...and a great guy.

Heheh...so are a lot of other people. It is possible, very possible, in a shallow (but not as shallow as you think) dive. I've seen several players do it.

Slimm,

I may have to duel you on that. I bet you can kill me first ... I can't hit my rearend with both hands. ROFL.

Thanks fellas :)

A smile came across my face as soon as my troops entered the maproom.  "That stuka is back!"  .  Immediately I thought a mini-BoB would be fun, so I grabbed the Hurri.  I lazily screwed the timing on the merge and ended with you behind me in the vert.  The thought of grabbing a stuka instead also crossed my mind :)

Any former AWers remember waaay back in the day someone would start chanting 'BoB BoB BoB!' on the open channel?  They'd call out two fields and up Emils and Spit/Hurri Is... great fun.

The path of least resistance mentality so common in the MA is a large "problem."  I quote "problem" because it is completely relative, and in the end, why should I tell anyone else how to fly?  For me, it's not about getting the kill, it's about *how* I get the kill... which is why you'll find me in a myriad of planes.  It's why I love the P40 - it's challenging to get those kills and survive.

No kidding about the p40 Oct... I took up an E the other night and guys went after me like I was in a 262.  Had 2 kills and 3 assists when I ran out of ammo, and my heart was racing the whole time.  Great fun.   :D
