I have the same problem. Live just out of city limits and everything stops 1 mile from my house.

I had to give up all online games because of it.

Can't even get windows or mcafee updates without being online for hours.

Man... Switch to cable if possible.  Once I got cable, I would NEVER, EVER think of going back to 56k.  Just wouldn't happen.  I'd rather have no internet at all than 56k.  Im sure many others share the same feeling ;)

Dredock,

Satelite is NOT the answer for gaming. It is just fine for surfing and down / up loading. I have satelite and just for grins connected to America's Army to see how bad it was. On an empty server I saw delays of 1.5 to 2 seconds. I tested it by shooting the wall and timing how long it took for the hole to show up. Bad news. There is also a monthly cost for satelite to consider. It ain't free. It should help with updates and so on but no good for gaming.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I used to have a dish for internet and it was not good at all for games. Having a minimum of a 600 ping is not going to get you into to many games. Plus it was $70 a month.

have you optimized your packets for dialup...

if so you can ping with a good modem at about 150ms..  did it for about 4 years of multiplay gaming..

150 ms to dsl/cables 50-80ms ping is not overbearing..

key to modems is setting them up right and a good isp...

above 200ms then you start to notice...

150-180ms though is good though..

get yourself a internal non win-modem.. and youll be square..

I live in an ice cave at the North pole and even I have cable. HTC needs to cap its servers and send all the HPB dialup weenies to their own areana! :D

its not that bad, just make sure you use a download manager that supports resume, and your set. pings are actually pretty damn good onc e you get it rigged right (i usually never get more than 200)

only real problem is watching videos, but if you keep it under 3 mb its not to bad.

You're saving money, my cheap prettythang would rather go back to dial up, but the rest of the family would lynch me.

Will you hate me really much if i tell you how great my 1mb up/down connection is GreenCloud?

Oh and I get it for a really good price too cause I was the first one in my part of town that signed up for the waiting list when they launched the broadband through cable tv.

I love my broadband.
