It's finally done.  My big web site update.

It's still kinda messy, but I finally got the huge trim article done.  The web site facelift is a detail.  The article below is the meat.
 http://lephturn.webhop.net/trim.htm

Read this or die, repeatedly.  If you are an ace, you know some of this already.  If you are not an ace, this is one of the reasons you are not.

Or use StSanta's abbreviated text:

"Keep yer bloody plane trimmed. If you don't know what trim is by now, you don't deserve to."

Thanks guys!  Please email sconrad@hfx.eastlink.ca if you see any problems, errors, or have suggestions.  I've already had one error/ommission pointed out.

I want to make sure I've got this right.  Constructive criticism is desired!  :)

Update.  I removed a couple of things that were wrong about manual trim disabling the auto-trim modes.  I also expanded on the difference between high-speed control slugishness and compression.

Thanks to Andy Bush and Caveman for the feedback that allowed me to make these changes.  I still need to research more about using manual trim while the auto-trim modes are engaged, but I plan to add that as well.

I think I'm going to re-write my example flight at the bottom of the article.  It's not really a typical flight at all, just me trying to explain uses for the various trim tools.  I'll work on it some more.

Good article, Leph; but a bit "fighter-centric".

If it misses anything out, it's the buffs. An explanation of the fine art of Alt-X and tail guns, an explanation of how set speed can be used as an escape dive, and a description of using the set speed command for landings would help the buffers. If you take a look through the Bigweek allied boards, you'll see that manual trim (and it's uses) confuses buffers as much as fighter jocks.

And a few lines on how trim can get a damaged bird home would finish it off nicely. (I've got more than one plane home with no aerlirons left.....)

I'm a dedicated bomber pilot, and until recently shied away from using any kind of manual trim, sticking to my Combat Trim like glue!  Then in the Bigweek Scenario, I learnt about using J and L to help stay with the formation, and was amazed at how well this worked... and, as you said, Seeker, I was reassured to see Combat Trim enable itself again.

I think I read somewhere that the trims can also help with landing, and as I sometimes have difficulty getting bombers to keep going down!, thought I would investigate that idea more.  I have quickly scanned Lephturn's article, but intend to read it more thoroughly and hopefully get a better grasp of how the manual trims can be used to get the best from my planes...   :)

Great stuff there guys... keep up the feedback.  :)

I'm not a buff jockey at all.  Would one of you write up a little blurb that I could include?  Full credit will be given of course.  Just a paragraph or two on how to use the trim tools in a buff would be GREAT.

Oh, and yeah I noticed the view article is out of date.  I actually have to modify that section about the custom gunsight.  You still want a custom gunsight, but with the new system you actually want it lower, not higher.  :)

If it's the rudder, shouldn't it show on the ball intrument? (or slip/bank indicator for RAF planes)

Seeker has it... the ball in the cockpit shows your slip angle.  If your controls are centered and your plane is still showing a slip angle, you may need to adjust rudder trim to compensate.

Hmmm.  This brings up another point.  I think I may need to mention in the manual trim section how to tell what trims to adjust.  Thanks guys.  :)
