Master the Aces High view system!
« on: March 23, 2001, 03:24:00 PM »
High folks, I've just completed a new article all about mastering the Aces High view system.  Take a look!  http://users.eastlink.ca/~sconrad/views.htm

This article covers the AH view system from the basics to the very advanced.  Please forward any feedback or suggestions.

Great article, appreciate it.

In it you say "...by default, Aces High is in Snap View mode, so we don't have to switch modes.  AH will do several other modes of view, including panning and padlock...".

I prefer to use the Instant view mode (F9), and so everytime I fly I have to switch from the default Snap view mode (F7).  Is there some way of making Instant mode the default?

Hmmm, I don't know any way to do that.

Thanks for the notes guys.

BTW, there is a reason I don't use or recommend the instant view mode.  The reason is that you don't see the "movement" at all as you toggle between views.  I prefer the visual feedback I get from the snap view mode, where although the view changes very fast, I can see the scene move as my virtual head swivels.  It's a small thing, but I think it helps with orientation.  Also, I have in occation spotted an aircrat setting up a bounce when I was switching views and caught a brief flash of icon as the view changed.  That momentary flash then let me know I missed something, and a quick view search revealed the bogey and saved my behind!

Great article Leph. Never thought about mapping the forward view that way. From what I gathered in your article you are using 8 views on your joystick for ACM (not including the special forward view)? That is what I use and was wondering. I have found it plenty for most ACM and use my keypad 1,3,9,7 keys every so often. What I need is two 8 way hats  .

In regards to having certain keys set (F9), when entering the arena I just thought of programming all of the keystrokes to ONE button on the joystick if you have some to spare.

This will only pay off if you always have multiple keystrokes when you enter of course, but even tho I don't use the instant view, I always start by hitting the key combo: Shift+F1, Y (squad hilight), Ctrl+I.

Programming that to one button could be smart (if I had an extra button free)

As for the views, it seems that none of you are using the down views? I myself am using that alot, especially the rear+left and rear+right down views, but also the front+right and front+left down views (these are can be somewhat limited in some planes), not to mention the front down view which I have set to display all of the instruments.

I have an 8 way hat and then have mapped two buttons at my left hand to engage either the up or down views.

Yes, in my case I am using an 8 way hat, plus I have one button on my stick that is Up view which I use as a modifier, as well as another button for my "front" instrument panel view.

Good idea programming all your startup keystrokes into a stick button.  I think I'm going to do that.  I too always to Shift-F1, Control-I, Control-S (squad highlight) when I enter the game.

How many of you are useing stick set to switch between available views on your 8 way hat?

And of those how are you setting up stick set to get more than 2 sets?  Every time I try to set up a third stick set in the cycle so I can get down views I end up with a mess & going back to what I had.

Currently I'm useing button 2 to cycle between stickset 1 & stickset 2.

First of all, I don't use "down" views at all when flying fighters.  I find the level views will let me see what I need to see within the limits of the art restrictions.  If I found it necessary, I think I would map a down modifier just like the Up button.

I don't use sticksets at all.  I know some do.  I pretty much stick to .50 cal armed fighters, so I have my trigger mapped to Fire Both and I leave it that way.  I know some folks have a stickset for .50 cal fighters, a stickset for mg/cannon birds, and another for buffs.  Personally, I use my one stickset, and if I need to buff or fly a cannon bird, I'll use the keyboard if I want to individually fire guns or do something my stickset doesn't allow.  Having one stickset keeps me from getting confused about what the buttons do.

Thanks for the great info on your webpage Lephturn.  Even though I may not use it personally it is a great place to send a new person that may have too many questions to answer online while trying to fly.

I read through your tips and setups also just to make sure there isn't anything I may have forgotten....thanks again !!!!

BTW Guys, I updated that view system article.

I added a few screenshots of my different front views, and I updated the sight to the one I am currently using.
 http://users.eastlink.ca/~sconrad/views.htm

I will be adding more screenshots, enhancements, and likely breaking it into three sections in the future.
