U.S. Researcher Says He's Found Atlantis Off Cyprus

LIMASSOL, Cyprus (Nov. 14) - A U.S. researcher on Sunday claimed he had found the lost civilization of Atlantis in the watery deep off Cyprus -- adding his theory to a mystery which has baffled explorers for centuries.

Robert Sarmast says a Mediterranean basin was flooded in a deluge around 9,000 BC which submerged a rectangular land mass he believes was Atlantis, lying beneath sea level between Cyprus and Syria.

"We have definitely found it," said Sarmast, who led a team of explorers 50 miles or 80 kilometers off the south-east coast of Cyprus earlier this month.

But Cyprus' chief government archaeologist, Pavlos Flourentzos, was skeptical.

"More proof is necessary,'' he said.

"The myth of Atlantis has been around for ages and it is generally believed that, if it ever existed, it was somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean - hence its name," Flourentzos added. "But ancient cities and civilizations in the Mediterranean region, such as the Minoan civilization of Crete, have disappeared as a result of major volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. For all we know, Atlantis may well have existed in our region.''

Deep water sonar scanning had indicated man-made structures on a submerged hill, including a wall, a walled hill summit and deep trenches, he said. But further explorations were needed, he added.

There are actually 3 atlantii.  One is in the mediteranean, one in the atlantic, and one just north of Madagascar.

Btw, evidence does point to a mass exodus of a huge highly advanced island way way back when.

no, it's not.
Did Plato ever go to Atlantis? How reliable of a source could he be? Did this guy even bother to pay attention to the manageable amount of archaeological research done on Cyprus? When I go to sleep at night, I snore directly above a "must visit" library of Cyprus archaeology, and funny, when I wake up in the morning, I see neither that dude nor his 49 companions down there.

I read something somewhere,
That, from the writings describing Atlantis, etc. they concluded that Ireland is Atlantis. they were giving the evidence that the sinking was a reef.

if I remb right from a long time ago. some teacher said that it was seen sinking in one part of the world and heard in another part of the world. so I'm guessing something happened on a grand seismic scale, around that time.

lasersailor,  could you point me to where that info comes from.
3 Atlantii? and evidence of mass exodos?

http://www.scotese.com/lastice.htm

http://www.scotese.com/moreinfo16.htm

some ancient texts found in almost any culture, refers to floodings.

hmmmm interesting.

how much higher would sea level be, if all ice were to melt?
how much lower would sea level be, if it was at the peak of the last ice age?

grr blast your eyes Hyena, now ya started me on a quest to find some answers. GRRRRR   :p

To me the sinking of Atlantis reminds me of alot of other stories from long long ago in a land far far away. A major even happens but because of the lack of knowledge and credible evidence things get blown out of proportion.

Take the great flood recorded in the bible. When that happened people didnt think much exsisted outside of where they could travel so its entirely possible that the people of those days could have thought the whole world was flooded. For instance, when the mississippi has flooded in the past it consumed alot of ground, if those people only thought the world was as big as they could see and travel by foot ti would seem as if the world flooded.

To me its very possible that a large scale city was flooded and appeared to sink, but for all we know that city a thousand years later was no longer flooded and sits on dry land.

Most of the bible stories are based on "other" stories from previous religions/civilisations. iirc the latest great flood theory now focusses on the flooding of the Black Sea.

Thats exactly my point, most of these stories we here are a result of the circumstances that surrounded them. With the lack of communication with any culture outside of your own and lack of knowledge of the size of the world it lead to things being taken as larger than they were. You must have seen the Disc. Channel show on the bible where the looked at all the major biblical events and how they could be explained, and if you didnt they discuss the flooding of the sea's theory.
