CPU Cooling
« on: November 16, 2004, 04:14:55 AM »
This is a general question about the effects of heat on MB and CPU's.

Previously my MB was running around 50 * C and the CPU at around 60 * C (140F). I thought that was running a bit hot so I went nuts on the fans and boot strapped a 4 inch fan where there should be none, and a few others around the case.

Got the CPU running at 43 and MB at 24. How would those drastic changes affect performance on the whole?

ooops - you should be in the hardware/software forum with this...

I had a lot of problems with cooling. My case was designed for a P2-266 CPU. When I upgraded (twice) finishing at AMD Athlon 1.2GHz, the case ventilation was inadequate to cope with the extra heat put out by the AMD processors. I was up to 67° for the CPU. Took the lid off the (desktop) case and watched the temperature plummet to about 50°. There was no noticeable change to performance.

The temperatures you have now are perfectly fine. What kind of case do you have? If you upgrade your case, get one which allows for fans on both front and back, and configure it for cross flow ventilation. All will be well!

IMO, unless the temp run so hot that you begin to have lock ups (which won't happen under 80°C I think), you won't have performance differences if you run at 35° C or 70° C. However, the life expectancy of your CPU will probably be seriously shortened if you run above the 60s. I try to stay ideally under the 40s (hard to achieve with a AMD 64), with 50°C as hard ceiling.

Ideally your MB should be ~10°C cooler than the CPU. It looks like your doing fine now.

Well as I said - I kinda went fan happy - they were on sale. I had a lot of extra wires hanging around - figured i'd hang a few fans around. As for the case, its basically a server case that I had a Duel AMD in before - so its a tank and weigh's as much as 1.

the temps themselfs dont effect speed at all, unless you have a Intel CPU and it starts throttling at high temp

50c MB temp!!!!111  what the hell was your case? did it have ANY fans in it? CPU temp of 60c is not that bad considering the MB temp.

im running at 17c mb, 39c - 43c CPU at a high overclock

You can sometimes make it run 3-4°C cooler just by putting the flat cables away from the fans. An IDE cable sitting in front of the CPU cooler will prevent a good airflow.
