This is excellent choice as an adaption of the F4U4`s. The Marines now have their `43 plane.

It depends on weather it has Water injection or not. It does have a birdcage which is an early F4U-1 trait however the F4U-1A was a field upgrade so some had it and some did not.

If it did not then it's performance will be almost identical to the F4U-1D without water injection except with a slight improvement in climb at Mil power. With water injection it will have about the same top speed as the 1D with a about the same climb as the current -1D at combat power.

The only advatage it will have is better turning ability as the early -1 did not have a spoiler strip on the port wing to reduce the stall characteristics. So it will turn better but really snap like a 190 when it goes. Also the F4U-1 had wing tanks and therefore will have longer range on internal fuel.

So basically it will be like the P-47D11 of the F4U series. Not to mention a very stylish for the fall season.

Very pretty!

A few questions though.

1. Will it operate off of CV? The real F4U1A
did not to my knowlege.

2. Will it model the correct lower seating position of the birdcage models?

3. Will it have the neat little window on the bottom?

VF-12 completed carrier qual by April of 1943.

Starting May 1, 1943, VF-17 landed F4U-1's and eventually all pilots got their five traps. VF-17 deployed aboard Bunker Hill with new F4U-1A's from the factory September 10 of '43.

So, VF-12 and VF-17 successfully completed carrier qual with F4U-1's.

Here's one opinion on why they did not remain as carrier squadrons:

"The trip to the West Coast was uneventful, and they sortied from San Diego on September 28.

But a few days out, official lightning struck. VF-17 was detached from Bunker Hill, and ordered to the island of Espiritu Santo, to operate as a land-based squadron. The problem was one of logistics, not of operations. The high command knew that Blackburn's Corsairs could operate from a carrier. But as the only Corsair squadron in a Navy full of Grumman Hellcats and Wildcats, supplying and maintaining them would be a headache."

Short answer: Yes, they can operate from carriers.

Some F4U-1s had the window in the bottom, but many pilots couldn't see out of them, so alot of them got painted over. This model happened to have one that was painted over.

The 109 oil-cooler shape is too narrow in all the models. It should be at-least twice as wide.
