MILWAUKEE - A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice an "Aunt Jemima" and saying she isn't competent to be secretary of state.

   
John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday's show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.


Rice has served as President Bush's national security adviser and was named this week to replace the departing Colin Powell as secretary of state.


Sylvester, who is white, also referred to Powell as an "Uncle Tom" — a contemptuous term for a black whose behavior toward whites is regarded as fawning or servile.


He said Thursday night that he was referring to remarks by singer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte that the price of admittance for blacks to the Bush White House was subservience.


As for Rice, "they're using her for an illusion of inclusion," he said, adding that he feels her history as national security adviser showed a lack of competence.


Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called the remarks "racially insensitive," while Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., said in a statement he joined "all Wisconsinites in rejecting" the statements.


Linda Hoskins of the NAACP's Madison branch said she could not comment on Sylvester's remarks until she had heard them in their entirety.


The station's corporate office received about 100 calls about his comments, Sylvester said.


He added that he has a long history of commitment to civil rights and has supported Madison's black community.


He said he was planning a giveaway on Friday's show of Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup. "I will apologize to Aunt Jemima," he said.


The incident came after a radio host in Milwaukee had his talk show taken off the air all of last week after he used word "wetback" to refer to undocumented Mexican immigrants, sparking protests from Hispanics

in the heart of liberal center in wisconsin. this guy does not have a pleasant future out there. methinks there is going to be some local backlash to this, especially after the recent "wetback" incident mentioned at the bottom of that article

ya know... I read the thing and scanned to see if the guy was a colored guy or a white guy (I absolutely knew they would say)...


when I seen he was a white guy I knew his bellybutton was grass.  I was thinking that if he were a colored guy..... he would have just gotten away with it.

yeah, but i am a bit suprised about the "wetback" thing myself. that guy is also from madison, but broadcasts in milwaukee now for the past 10 years.

since that appened there has been almost nothing said of possible reporcussions, or diciplinary action towards him (his name is mark belling) other than off the air 1 week.

maybe i am being naive here, but doent NAACP stand for the National Accociation for the Advancment of Colored People? wouldn't that include colors other than black? not a peep from them for the "wetback" remark though.

but wait i am being to logical about this whole thing.

what is worse? the "wetack" or the "aunt jemima" comment?

they are both equally offensive IMHO. but my point is this is 2 incidents in a few weeks here in wisconsin.

unfortunatly the most recent is proably going to get more media attention, and be looked down upon more than the "wetback" comment.

both are wrong, and should be dealt with equally, or is it OK to say one over the other?

Actually, the NAACP hasn't said anything yet.  I wonder if because he was saying it about the Bush administration he'll get away with it.

I believe the NAACP realizes that some colored folk are not "black" enough and therefore fair game.... but it is a sticky situation... I believe that they would have  been a lot more comfortable with a colored person de blacking successful Bush appointees rather than some honky.... no matter how liberal he is/was.

my guess... he is about to get a lesson in how many black friends he really has.

tweety... are you saying that the NAACP embraces the conservative black in the same manner as the liberal one?   Pretending something isn't happening doesn't make you any more noble than me.

hawk...  should people who have it easier be treated worse than people who have a tougher time?   so far as say.... freespeech?  Should free speech be doled out on the basis of color?   Just being a hypocrite doesn't make you any more noble than me.

Growing up in Texas I always assumed the term "wetback" originated as a description of those crossing the Rio Grande river illegally hence the "wet" part. Nothing racial about it but I can understand how it could be perceived as being derogatory as it most likely was used that way by many unhappy with this illegal immigration.

Ahh and here it comes.  Tweety's steryotypeing of us all as racist rednecks bigots.  YES TWEETY THERE IS A DOUBLE STANDARD.  If Colin Powell or Dr. Rice were liberals there would be half the bad things said about them.

IF THIS GUY had be a conservative and said the things he said there would be MAJOR hell to pay.  The truth is no one here is really a bigot.....we just don't care because it doesnt affect our lives.

I wasn't being all that serious, as you can tell by the "hahaha".  Anyways, I just think these threads are funny.  All this shouting of "IF THEY WERE BLACK/LIBERAL/JEWISH/WHITE/HINDU/A MAN, XYZ WOULD OR WOULD NOT HAPPEN!"  Then when anyone questions the logic, everyone jumps on them as a racist.  Seriously, who cares about all these what ifs?
