hypocrisy and Irony
« on: November 20, 2004, 07:39:58 PM »
I thaught it would be a good discussion how hypocrisy and Irony tend to go hand in hand.

Example people complained about that stupid monday night football intro involving a woman from the tv show "desperate housewives"  What were people so worried about that it would distract from two girls wrestling over a miller light?

I could probably think of 100s of examples but really don't feel like it but I find it interesting how these two seem to go and in hand.

Well there are always the two huge ones.

Pro choice people thinking it is the right of the women to chose to murder her baby..(I am pro choice, dont start with me,) but being agaist the death penalty.

And then the pro life people being agaist the right of a women to chose, yet all for the right for the government to kill people.

Well, there's killing, and then there is Killing.  An unborn, at the very minimum, is innocent, but the deathrow criminal is not (Assuming that justice were perfect, which it is not).

The thread isn't about arguing the content of the matter more the contradiction.  I fall into a different catagory than GTA but I don't intend to argue with him about it.

EDIT:

Yet another example would be that:

While both being comedians and both saying the same thing about different cultures....Larry the Cable guy is considered a racist redneck and dave chappell is a comic genious.

Black comedian complaining aobut racism. Then going on Def comedy jam and picking out the sole white person in the audiance and spending 1/2 hour mocking him for being white.

I have heard an argument that it is not hypocritical if one is against the taking of innocent life.

But don't you see.  That's how it is totally applicable.  (I DONT WANT TO ARGUE THE PRO/CON JUST THE APPLICABILITY TO THE CURRENT TOPIC)

Someone who's pro-choice but anti deathpenalty is a contradiction in term thus hypocrixy and Irony.

Laz makes a good one.  Not to pick on the left because I'm sure there's many on the right but.

"peace" protesters that spit on and push/shove all those who may protest them.....not very peacfull.  It allways cracks me up when I hear "SHUT UP YOU RIGHT WING FASCISTS ALL YOU DO IS SPREAD HATE".

I've found that reading reports of black "conservative" church leaders who condemn homosexuality on the basis of "it says in the Bible it was wrong" make me snicker.

I'm paraphrasing, but the last quote I read on it was something like "How dare these people try to take something that God has clearly said is wrong, and try to put it on the books of this country as being right?"

Slavery, anybody?

I'm not sure I find your comparison?  I don't recall in the bible God or Jesus for that matter condeming slavery.  I could be wrong though.  If they'd condone slavery of other races as black people to me that would fit perfectly.

I was responding to the second half of GtoRA2's argument,

If "innocent" is added to the mix, hypocrisy is not necessarily present on the pro-life side.

No... the Bible said slavery was right, and it is "in the books" of our country as wrong.  That is what I meant.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough... but since this thread was about hypocrisy I didn't think I'd have to spell it out.
