Another milestone in Blair's Britain! OK, this didn't come from Blair, but no-one would have suggested it in Maggie's time, preferring to wait for a nanny government in full cry. Hunting's been banned, smoking is soon to be banned, so why not ban our lifelong tradition of fish and chips? Whatever next?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said that the amount of suffering felt by fish should put people off eating them.

Dawn Carr, the director of Peta in Europe, said: "We are not pulling any punches on this one. We don't think people should eat fish at all - and if that means they do not eat fish and chips, then so be it.

"People should go on a fishing boat and see the amount of suffering a fish goes through when it is caught."

The organisation, which is known for its anti-fur tirades, says that fish also should be kept off menus because they live in water so polluted that toxic chemicals are ingested by those who eat them.

The National Federation of Fish Friers, which represents 8,500 fish and chip shops described the suggestion as "potty".

Adrian Herdman, 57, the federation's president, who has run a shop in Swansea for 20 years, said: "Why would they want to get rid of a meal that is not only part of British history, but also well known for being good for you?"

Peta, whose supporters include Sir Paul McCartney and the Dalai Lama suggested that fish and chip shops should serve fish substitutes instead.

The call is part of its "fish empathy" project, which claims that fish are no more deserving of being eaten than a dog or cat.

What we need to start toind is finding a PEta building and holding picnics on the sidewalk in front of their buildings in protest all dressed in genuine leather and fur coats. LOL

I rememeber being at a county fair some years back that actually had a PETA stand there.

I had just bought some fishing gear at another stand when the girl there started telling me how it was not only cruel to the fish because the fish felt the pain from the hook but also because it was painful for the worm to be put on a hook.

DRED I think it would be interesting to see the fallout from an event like this:

Truck the Chickens in live packed in very small cages. Slaughter them on the spot. Then they move to the cleaning line. Then dressing. Then grilling and cooking. Than a big old BBQ right in front of PETA HQ. You can even go so far as to feed homless people or something.

Them sayin you are being insensative would akin to you saying they are violating your rights of free speech and peacfull protest. Lord knows they've done some insensative things (handing buckets of blood to kids outside of KFC)

Plants send out electrical impulses when damaged that can be interpreted as pain. What the hell are these guys gonna do if this is proved.

There are several girls I know at college that are vegetarians. 1 of them is constantly catching illnesses, another has to take dozens of pills each day because of her poor diet which made her very ill last year.

Fish and chips is great!

Oh, and why aren't these groups working towards the eradicaton of all predatory animals? I bet it hurts the fish when a shark eats it, too. I doubt the mouse particularly likes the way a cat usally plays with it before delivering the killing blow.

They're just a bunch of self-hating nutjobs IMO.

I think that they should ban Fish & Chips in Britain. Why? Because it’s much easier to say, “All British food sucks.” then it is to say, ”All British food sucks except Fish & Chips.”

Lol Beetle you sure are scraping the barrel for your Blair witch hunt.

Some Peta nuts, (and i think most will agree they are fruit and nut cases) make a stupid suggestion and you try to link it to Blair with the "Nanny state" tag.

If you really feel that strongly about getting Blair out then get off yer butt, on yer feet and go door knocking.

One thing though, best make sure your dental insurance is fully paid up

The PETA world headquarters is located here in Norfolk, VA. It is often suggested to have a BBq or picnic in front of it. A local radio station's morning show has had in the past (until forced to change the name) The FM99 Tommy and Rumble PETA fishing Tournament. People would decorate their boats with stuff like foam target deer with arrows stuck in em and other hilarious stuff. I would be all for trying to organize a BBQ or something for any who are interested.
