Is that not how it happened in WW2? the best pilots and generals and stuff got the best planes, or skins, like they have to work and pay for their skins!
No, that is not how it worked as a rule. And even when it did happen you didn't have a squad flying Me262s with another squad flying Bf109E-4s right next to them. Thank you, but getting stuck in Spitfire Mk Ias or A6M2s every Tour does not sound like a fun experience to me. Nor is it a good way to attract new customers for HTC. "Come fly AH where you get a 1940 fighter to act as a target drone for our best pilots who all have free F4U-4s, Spitfire Mk XIVs, Tempset Mk Vs and Me262s!"
As soon as P-51Ds were available they went to squads, not individuals. The same is true of Spitfire Mk XIVs and Tempests.
I am aware of a squadron of experts the Japanese put together in 1944 flying J2Ms or N1Ks or some advanced Navy fighter. The Russians also targeted veteran and elite squads for the La-7.
On the other hand I am aware of a Hurri IIc squad in Burma, 1945 that was given Spitfire Mk XIVs.
