Need a new Cpu

Just got a gforce 5700 and i need to update my cpu. I am not at home but its a intel III 850 mhz. Will i need a new motherboard our can i just stick in a new cpu and run with it. Whats a good price to spend also i have 512 ddr.

You gotta post your motherboard specs to get this question answered.

You may have some room for a better cpu, but I'd almost bet that a new motherboard/cpu combo is the way better alternative since you're already buying ram. (and maybe even power supply)

pent 3's are getting out dated ... there really isnt anything past a 933mhz cpu for those . so if you want to upgrade your gonna have to get mainboard/cpu combo plus ram.

I am sorry, by motherboard specs I meant who manufactured it, what is the model and version as roscorro said you may be very limited in upgrading the cpu.

If you are really tight on costs and do not mind being again limited on upgrades you can get a nforce 2 motherboard with a 2500 333MHz fsb cpu for about 120 on pricewatch.com. These will work well with your new ram (make sure it is al least PC2700)

or if you can spend more then go for the lower end A64s i.e. 2800/3000 939 config. You will likely spend about 190-250 for this but you have a larger upgrade path.

I strongly do not recommend a purchasing a slightly higher clock P3 ---think it is money wasted

id check the ram though most of the p-3's ive messed with had either rambus or sdram   .. he's most likely going to need ddr type ram if he upgrades the mb.

thats no problem $250 is no big deal. My roomate can get me a deal cpu but he is out of town. I could spend $400 with the ram if i need it but i would have a problem with the amd 64. My roomate has one that he built and is having all kinds of problems. Fedex came today and i am sure its a new chip and mother board for him i dont like to have problems. I would just like to have something that will run this game the video card worked great from my old gforce 2 64mb but it would be nice just to go ahead and upgrade all the way. Also is it hard to replace the motherboard our could i do it. My roomate will be back in 2 weeks but i would just like to go ahead and do it myself.

yes this is true - i was refering to the 512 ddr that he mentioned he would purchase at first.

You should not have problems with the AMD 64 if you do a full reinstall of software. the ram problems were perhaps with the older 64s - the new 939 cpus should not be problematic. Best performance is acheived by getting good ram (C2) but is expensive however you could get 512 appropriate ram for about $80.

Remember the xps are way cheaper and will also do a very good job for AH but the upgrade path is limited. Nothing wrong with the xp 2500 to 3000 - they all are reasonably priced

Sorry - did not see the rest of your question.

It is very easy to replace your motherboard, but if you are very new at this then I'd suggest to wait on your roomie. The catch 22 is -- please plan to reinstall your software. Windows will not like it if you try to do it without doing a reinstall.

One thing I can guarantee though is that you will see a world of difference with either of the upgrades - xp or 64

i will wait for my roomie he said that the he took out his old xp 2500 and put in his amd 64 so i just might get that one for free. Looking in his comp room their is 6 cpu sitting around so it looks good.

AMD 3000+.......210$ (last time i checked)
sapphire 9600xt card
gig of ddr333 ram
runs EVERYTHING like buttah(ok doom 3 gives it the slows with high settings in a furball)
