I've had cancer (hodgkins), My Grandmother, and one of my sister in laws both had breast cancer.
I think it humorous, My sister in law finds my joke humorous, And my grandmother who eventually died of old age at 88 would have found both jokes humorous
In addition I have an uncle who died of cancer, and and my brother in laws mother died of cancer.
knowing them as I did I feel confident speaking for them in saying they too would have found these humorous.
What your doing is trying to be PC.
The problem with political correctness is a great deal of the time we are supposed to try to not offend people who probably wouldnt be offended to begin with.
What we end up doing is giving a bunch of thin skinned crybabies an excuse to cry about something.
In this case and speaking from my own experiance, I found that keeping a sence of humour about it is part of what gets you through
