training arena
« on: December 04, 2004, 05:55:41 PM »
i was about to log on to the main arena today.
things got a bit slow lately and i find myself playing less and less in the MA, i dont know what it is but im not enjoying it as i used too, mybe its became too much of a routine who knows.
so any way i am about to log in too the main arena when i noticed there are several people in the training arena.
i thought why not hop in for a bit, see if i can help out anyone.

2 hours later here i am typing this massege.
can you belive it? 2 hours of answering dumb questions, flying straight and level, being a target practice to guys who cant hit me from 200 yards when im straight and level, winning dogfights in less then 30seconds, then explaining what i did for as long as 30 minutes, doing lame BnZ passes trying to get the other guy to actually evade me.

and yet i had fun. i felt a i have accomplished something. i helped a newbie, and it felt good. i didnt kill anyone or landed a whooping 20 kills, and still i felt good.

so here is my advice to all you guys who feel they have no challenge in AH anymore.
go to the TA pick anewbie, and help him out- belive me its a challenge, and if i did it with my half english i can do it too and probably batter.
Give it a shot.

I never really hung out in the TA however I often took "Veteran" sticks to the DA and spent hours teaching them ACM.

It was some of the best fun I ever had in AH, and I met and made great friends there.

I recommend it to anyone.

I was one of those newbies that Flyboy helped and I really appreciate it. Like he said, us new guys are always looking to learn from you vets. It might be frustrating at times; what's simple for you, is challanging for us but your creating good fights for the future. It's not just ACM you teach but attitude. I've heard a lot about how the MA is full of people who only know how to HO. When you go to the TA with a bunch a newbies you can tell them, and show them through your actions that there are other ways to fight than just jousting. And another quick note, the TA isn't just for newbies, anyone can go in there and brush up on their skills. Not everyone in there is a newbie and I bet you'll find some pretty good action. So if there's ever a time you vets are bored with the same ol, we'd love to have you in the TA to learn from. Ok, I've said enough for a new guy:D , just wanted to thank Flyboy for his time along with Ghosth, Fuzeman and Inyo among others. guys and thx for all the help you've given.

To continue with the Furball Arena rant....

You want to improve your dogfighting skills?  Want to learn air combat SA?  Want to get better with aerial gunnery at many angles and orientations?

You *have* to dogfight (furball).  No other way to do that other than... to do it!!  You can take years to find isolated fights in the MA, only to have it ruined by .... (fill in the blank).  Or you can find some H2H arenas, but... otherwise you must be very committed.

No one even knows there is an "indended" dogfighting arena in the DA!!   It's close.  Almost there... but not quite.  IMO, the 'fog of war' needs to be removed and dar allowed.  For the MA, those are fine, but if you want to practice ACM and gunnery they are just annoying.
Ok, that said, what the "intended" dogfighting arena really needs is advertising!!  No one knows it is there or uses it!!  Also, this would be a great 'warm up' area before entering the MA!

If all some want to do is HO and joust, then fine... let them.  But I bet that gets old after a while.  Having an area where a furball or dogfighting can usually be found would be good.

I know I am not alone in thinking this would work or be a good idea!!  But, getting others to come 'out of the woodwork' seems to be quite challenging!  Having options to the HO can't be all bad!

Ok, I am done for now....

Regards,

Malta

Flyboy

I've discovered the same thing about the DA/TA and couldn't agree more with you.

It was quite an experience to fly straight and level and let someone get their first "kill".

You know, to everyone who complains about how (timid/weak/lack of ACM/newbie/killstealing, etc, etc) people are...go to the DA/TA and help someone.  For some of the peeps with THOUSANDS of posts...I'd say you have more than enough time on your hands.

All Right FlyBoy!!!

I myself tend to try and get in the TA every day for an hour ish.  I have asked several "vets" to help me and to also start loggin' TA time.  (urchin, XtrmeJ, etc) and I can't help but feel that if WE go in and TRAIN the next generation, the MA will be a much happier experience for all.

Keep it up!! And yes, to all the naysayers, it's a BLAST in the TA.  Sure you gota answer alota ?'s, but it's FUN helping these guys out.

Don't like face shooting jousters???  Log some time in the TA and SHOW 'em how to fly.

Yeah, it is fun enough. I be-bop in there every once in a while myself.

Everyone should do a little community service now and then.

Always make sure you show them

a: How to set views &

b: how to set (and what is) convergence

Those are a couple of the not so obvious things.

Mentoring new players and seeing them evolve and get better can be very rewarding.

Though I miss you in MA Flyboy...

I can only second that. TA/DA is important.

Im not a very good/experienced pilot - yet. But i kinda grew up in a Squad that from the very beginning taught me ACMs, tactics and lots of tips and tricks. Or just furballing in DA. Hey it took them more than 60 secs to kill me today... i must be getting better! Thanks and to the 71st.

If im not in the mood, or get frustrated with MA or just dont want to ruin my stats today i spend time in DA or TA. Most times i find someone that can further my skills. It also happens that im the one answering questions. Or find someone to play a game of 'follow the leader'.

Go there, try flying through hangars inverted. Practice your carrier takeoffs and landings. Too easy?? Take a Lanc abd keep the carrier turning ;)

I guess what i want to say is: TA/DA is the place to improve your skills without the hassles of MA; no matter how good you are (or think you are) - you can always get better...

I had a blast as a trainer, probably some of the best times I've ever had in many ways. I think many of the trainers become so engrossed you lose sight of the MA....glad to see you spend some time there:aok
