DLP or LCD?
« on: December 05, 2004, 11:00:53 AM »
Ok, Im beginning my research on TV technology. Anyone care to give me a push off and tell me which of the above TV's is better? They seem to be about the same price, give or take a few dollars ... and the LCD looks clearer to me ... but I've heard DLP is the way to go?

Thanks for any guidance!

DLP has yet to be perfected, as you can see a "Rainbow Effect" on the sceen.  As for LCD, it's replication of Black levels is just as bad as DLP and Plasma screens.  The black levels which are supposed to be "black" are "grey to dark grey".

Personally, you might at the new JVC line of LCoS, which stands for Liquid Crystal on Silicon.  Rather than use one chips for all three colors (LCD, Plasma, DLP), LCoS uses a 3 chips (one for red, green and blue).   These TV's have some of the best HD renderings that I have ever seen.  These are in the $4000-$6000 pricepoint.

I have always enjoyed the hobby of Home Theater and have been long considering getting a Loewe Aconda 38" CRT HDTV which has the best picture I've ever seen.  BUT, I am now wanting one of these JVC's.

you might even want to go to a "High End" store (not Best Buy, Circuit City).

If you need any more help, need any questions answered, please ask.

I hope this is a start for you.

I will go projector instead.

The price on the projectors have dropped in half due to the plasma screens being so cheap now.

If by DLP you mean plasma tv's then I'd go for the latest generation of those unless you plan to use it as a pc monitor too.

LCD's are not mature enough to be used as tv's and you only get one half decent 30 inch lcd for the price of a very good 42 inch plasma.

my opinion anyway

We use to have a Barco CRT projector (3x8inch tubes) at our Club but we sold it and bought a Sony LCD projector instead and we don't regret at all... Barco was HUGE, 80kg projector while new Sony is smaller than some books, has good picture and colors and has much more brightness than CRT had.

aknimitz, check out the Sony 42" Grand WEGA™ HDTV (KDF-42WE655) at Circuit City. If there's one near you.

Picture is fantastic. It looked better that the DLP they had in the store. I'm within a hair breath of buying one.
