22long is a deer poachers friend.

22mag is a deer poachers dream.

A pellet gun, depending on its velocity is most often adequate for squarels. When I was very young, maybe 12 or 13 I would hunt squarels with a .177 cal pelet gun. It was about 800fps... Nothing too powerful but enough to get the job done from 35 yards max. Most often it would require two shots... But rarely did I have to shoot them anymore than that.

A 22 long is ideal for what you are talking about. If you are worried about the noise then go with a 22CB but keep your distance under 40 yards... Even with the shorts, I would say keep it under 40 or 50 yards... Most deffinatly.

Thanks for the info guys.  At close range, I think a .177 pellet rifle does more damage than a 22 short.  I know this isnt a very scientific example, but my local news station showed the comparitive power one day.  They set up several coke cans (unopened) and shot them with a .22.  The .22 went through the cans, leaving an
'icepick' type wound.  Then they shot the cokes with a pellet rifle.  The pellet went it, and then exploded out the other side of the can.

That probably reflects the type of bullet used, not the power.

sun... another reason to stop watching local news.    The 22 short is about twice the energy of a pellet even at 1,000 fps which is about max for spring air guns.

Also remember that the difference is that the can should be filled with solid stuff.  I.E. Partially freeze the cans.

The pellets have no energy but often tumble.

If you want a half decent pellet gun go to a gun show and scout around.  I got a chinese .177 model that does 1100 fps for 50 bucks.  Thing still works.

Ive killed several rabbits and squirrels with my pellet gun.  None were on purpose, but with only two pumps of air (it says about 6 is needed to fire) I didnt expect them to die.

I got a squirrel with a pelllet gun, but I had used my last shot to down him, so he was on the ground kicking and twitching.  Had to finish him with the butt of the gun.

Make sure you're using the pointed pellets, not flat headed ones.

try a 9mm compressed air rifle. it has plenty energy to go through a squirrel's head.  I got one from Cabelas.com. I was pretty impress from what I saw, for an air rifle.

The Model 54 Magnum Air Rifle has a floating action that shifts rearward, eliminating most recoil. Amazingly fast, it fires a .177-caliber pellet at 1,100 fps (.22-cal. pellet fires 900 fps).
