The application doesnt care weather you have pci express or agp. Btw current graphic cards dont use the bandwidth of pci express, a 8 lane pci express is as fast as the 16 used for graphic boards and an agp graphic card gives the same framerate than an pci express one.
Personally im not eaven sure if the chipsets and ram could effectively deliver enogh data to fill up pci express x16 when any card would take the data, anyone know the numbers? Wouldnt surprise me when in 2 years motherboards with real pci express x16 will totally own todays motherboards speedwise.

I think its a total waste the motherboards use 16lanes pci express for the graphic board and squeeze all the rest on the remaining 4 lanes, but thats just me.

PCI express promises to be upgrade able for future graphic cards, but when you look at all the other stuff in computer industry you will notice that there is no guarantee, maybe in 3 years there is a new standard and no one uses pci express because its outdated.

PCI Express is nice but Pentium CPU deliver less power for what you pay than AMD xp64. Actually DDR2 memory is double expensive and has the same performance than DDR. On the other side i think the intel stuff is a bit less dificult on the ram compatibility.

As long as you stay away from integrated graphics, shared memory and agp-express your fine.

You can read in other threads, to make it short your system would work fine but eaven a top notch system cant run ah2 at full framerate with 1600 x 1200 and full detail.

1GB ram is good, more wont give enogh improovement in ah2 to justify it.

3.2GHz Pentium is cheap and fast, good choice. Stay away from the 3.6 and 3.8 GHz Pentiums, running verry hot.

Pentium motherboards i have no idea which one to take. Only thing i can say is that asus got a good reputation for motherboards but i am not sure if they are dropping quality for speed at the moment, would be a loss of a good brand.
Stay away from elitegroup, have them blow up in work on a regular basis.

Graphic card i would go for 256MB ram, make sure to install the old style drivers (newest version) and NOT the .net ones.

All i posted above is just my own opinion, and its nothing prooved or what i messured out myself.

ciao schutt

Try this site:

http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2282

This one seems to be almost the same as the Intel computer you have in mind without the 1GB RAM.

http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2282&p=3

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8 GHz (939) 90 nm $170

Abit AV8 (939) $103

XFX GeForce 6600GT AGP 128 MB $229

[Edit]

Try this one instead:
http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2282&p=5

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K 2.2 GHz (939) 90nm $285

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum $131

Mushkin Dual Pack 2x512 PC3200 2.5-3-3 $159

XFX GeForce 6600GT AGP 128 MB $229

Another alternative is the 6800 which is slightly higher in price than the 6600.

The X600 Pro or XT are not that good.

Schutt - Actually DDR2 suffers from really bad latency problems compared to DDR.
As the AMD64 cpu more or less relies on low latency memory for best performance AMD is skipping support for DDR2 and going straight to DDR3.
Current graphics cards don't saturate the AGP bus, never mind about PCI-Express.
It will be the future though.
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
Asus M3N-HT mobo
2 x 2Gb Corsair 1066 DDR2 memory

I just built a new rig:

Asus P5AD2 premium 925x chip set PCI-Express mobo

Intel P-4 3.6ghz w/HT 800 FSB w/ Tower 112 CPU cooler w/2  vantec tornados 119 cfm with thermaltake 4 fan speed controller
CPU temp 16c

Corsar XMS 5400 DDR2 2 GIG ram / ram temp 28c
Asus AX800XT platinum Extream 256 meg 1000 mhz True PCI-Express Grapics card /Card temp 19c

2 Western-Digital 10,000 RPM raptors HDs 74gig a piece w/fans
1- light-on 40x dvd-rom
1- light-on duel layer dvd burner and cd-rom burner
1- sony floppy
1-light-on card reader
audigi 2 sound card w/ 5.1 klipsh speakers
22' nec diamondtron monitor
vantec stealth 460watt PSU and 12v 300 watts fan PSU
5 meg cable
Win XP home SP1
epson 300 CD, DVD and picture printer

Lian-li vb2000 server case w/2 blow holes on wheels, 19 total fans 4 fans in the swamp cooler w/moisture filters-and dust free and pressurized, the rest of the fans are in the case. All the fans power, except for graphics card and the 3 PSU fans are supplied by the 12v 300 watts PSU. The 460 watt PSU just runs the hardware.

I have been in furballs and getting around 105 Frame rates.
At altitude looking straight up Im getting 264 FRs
In the cockpit around 178 frs
on some guys 6 looking at the ground about 145 frs

I forget what resolution Im running but when I get home I will check. Also im not shure how I have my graphics card running.
 Im not overclocking at all.
