Darrell was one of the nice guys in the DFW scene. He'd help judge local contests. Come out to show support for other bands. Generally being the opposite of most people in the local scene, which was pretty cutthroat.
Pantera could have gotten signed long before they did, but they held out for a deal that let their father produce the album in his studio. I think that says a lot about loyalty.
The last band I was with in DFW had hired a drummer who had just graduated from PIT. He was a huge Pantera fan. We'd come off stage and were hanging at the bar doing the PR game. The drummer walks up, we introduce him to Darrell and Rex. He turned white as a sheet.
Not much of a eulogy, but having lost a lot of friends over the years this is something I needed to do for closure.
