I've already reserved hostel beds from Chelsea area for 28$, can't really beat that anywhere.

I'm aware that the New Year is an overrated frenzy.

Mora, hostels in the USA are not the hostels in Europe. I've been to a few in Germany and they were pretty good. Very basic, a bed is all you need. But generally I wouldn't trust something that cheap, especially in New York

I could be wrong though, never been to a New York hostel... and the hostel(s) in the Milwaukee are in relatively shady neighborhoods.

It's a one that was recommended by many other Finns so I took my chances. It even has a website. We'll see how it works out.

If your paying only 28 dollars for a room anywhere near manhatten, bring your own clean needles. The ones the hostel will supply will be dirty. I've stayed at the paramount hotel it cost me 185 for the night and that was a hole in the wall of a room.

Ya just might want to rethink that stay.

Look in the east rutherford/ rutherford NJ area there are a bunch of hotels by Giants stadium. You still are only ten minutes away from NYC and can see the skyline from the hotels. and the are reasonable. A little farther west but not much are the Weslley (spelling?)hotel and the Howard Johnson's in clifton nj right on route 3 which is the main road into NYC. The Howard Johnson will probably run ya about 50 to 75 a night.

Fry's is great...as long as you don't mind going back to the store 2 or 3 times to get a part that actually works. They are the kings of repackaging, "open box" and the infamous "rain check".

Actually that hostel aint bad, as far as hostels go. The YMCA on the upper east side is also a decent bet. The Carlton Arms is about as cheap as you can get for a hotel, and it's pretty cool...

My advice for your stay there is to get the hell out of midtown (which is basically where you'll be) and walk south instead of north - unless the whole Times Square cheesey theme stuff is up your alley. The soul of NYC is south of Houston street.

I really don't care about the cheesey stuff. I would actually like to have fun on the Eve. What options are there? All the clubs and bars are prolly packed and no change of getting in after 4pm?

Nah, there are more than enough bars there to accomodate everyone on new years. Plus.... during the holidays the place thins out as everyone is away visiting families somewhere else in the country.

42nd street is going to be an absolute nightmare though so avoid it...

My favs were all the small Irish-type pubs... and they're everywhere and pretty friendly. It's actually a really really great time to be visiting.

I just spent two weeks in NYC. I also made a two-day trip to Pensacola, Florida, to see the finnish Brewster in the naval aviation museum.

Mora, for flying inside the US, I recommend checking out http://www.jetblue.com, it has really cheap prices. My flight from JFK to new orleans was $69 one way.

Kossu, My, Zombie, Z's brother and Lart made a two week trip in march, checking out a bunch of aviation museums. They started from florida, drove to alabama, kentycky, ohio and finally washington dc. You might want to post on the virtualpilots news for tips.

Camo, how was Pensacola, is it worth a visit apart from the museum? How was the museum and the Brewster? I'm aware of JetBlue, but I booked from Spirit instead, 51$ one way. Every $ counts.
