I come from a place where a lot of folks hunt and fish because it can be very economical.  A lot of people do spend big bucks on boats and planes for hunting, but many others just but a license and one box of ammo with the expectation to feed the family for the winter with hundreds of pounds of moose meat.

It is amazing to me that folks spend this kind of money to hunt this way.  You could buy a hunting trip to Alaska for what these guys spend.

Eskimo, don't get me started on what some of these yahoos, including my family, waste on hunting.  Now thousands to maybe hook a grander, that is money well spent....

Eskimo...

I used to be on a lease. 600.00 for the season. That got me 3 hunting spots , a camp house (Wood Stove Heated only) , and a Smoke house to smoke Jerky and Sausage if I wanted. WHich I did MANY a weekend.....Anyways....

I had to supply my own food , feed , gun , shells , and whatever else. All total in a year of hunting I may have spent 1500.00 on everything. Between driving to the lease and all the stuff...prolly that a year.

It was great fun. Killed alot of deer there as well.

What thses guys do is NOT hunting at all in my book. It's just pay , sit , shoot , and go home. Heak they clean the deer for ya. Package it up  if ya like.

Hunting like that just has never been my bag.

Shoot a 12 point and the story goes somoething like....

Well there was 22 deer in the corn..I just sat and waited for the right one to move into a clear shot then BANG. They picked me up in the truck and took the deer to be processed. I got back and had a few beers and bragged about what a great hunter I was.

Those deer...although very smart..are really confined..and just a matter of time. It's not at all what I call Hunting. Its more of a champagne Killing ranch.:(

EDIT:  Also after a visit to http://www.perlitzranch.com it seems that this was a setup hunt.  What I gathered was the guy in the truck was probably one of the employees of the ranch or something and was pissed off.

Does having a larger buck help for breeding other deer to hunt?

Yes Gun..it was a "setup" hunt so to speak.

Yes  , leaving the Younger biger bucks to do the breeding is best.:)

Well, to be exact, the size in pounds of the buck doesn't matter; these are all dog-deer in size.  What matters are the antlers, how many points, spread, and tine size.  That deer had some drop points, which for some reason are desirable, though I think they ruin a rack.

Google "Boone & Crockett", and it will explain it.

We bought a 60 year old hardware store a couple of years ago in East Texas.  The owner had always had a yearly "big buck" contest and awarded the winner a nice deer rifle, with the caveat that the store got the mount.  When we got the store, there were about 30 mounts, and some really nice racks.  These were East Texas deer, though, and dressed out way over (175#) what this Edwards plateau and white-brush hunter is used to (100#).  Even those are tiny compared to a Minnesota or Wisconsin deer, though.

http://www.boone-crockett.org/ is a good tool, thanks.  I was just curious what "drop points"  are those points that go down instead of up?
