Bobby Fisher the Chessmaster

Bobby Fisher is getting out of jail, finally.
Being on the Wanted list by the U.S. Fisher was arrested and brought to jail in Japan, I think when his residence permit expired.
With nowhere to go, he's been in jail for months now.
Oh, what did he do wrong? Well, he played chess in the wrong country (Jugoslavia) while the country was under a business ban or something alike.
That chessgame, by the way was a rematch with former world champion, Boris Spassky, who's world championship ended in a very historical match in the middle of the cold war, 1972.
The place back then was Reykjavik Iceland, and that's where he's going. Little Iceland has offered him residence.

Well, one day I'm at least I'm happy with my government.

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Yawn..... Bobby performed how many matches in the last 30 years? The guy cant even hold a decent job other than playing games! And he even refuses to play games most of the time!
Sounds like iceland has a new deadbeat to feed...
But he will blame his inability to cope with life and chess on the USA, and all the stalkers will buy into it...
Whatever...

He isn't out of jail or the woods, yet. He may still be deported to the U.S. since he is still a citizen, has a warrant issued for his arrest and an extradition treaty does exist between Japan and the U.S.

He would face a maximum 10 years in prison if deported and arrested at the point of entry.

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO — A 16-year-old boy has won the U.S. Chess Championship, making him the youngest player to claim the title since 14-year-old Bobby Fischer won it in 1958.

Hikaru Nakamura of White Plains, N.Y., won the $25,000 prize Monday after beating Alex Stripunsky, 34, of Rego Park, N.Y., in two overtime matches. The 11-day tournament in San Diego began with a field of 65 competitors.

Nakamura, who was born in Japan, was taught chess by his stepfather and began playing competitively at age 7. A little more than two years later, he qualified as an American master. Nakamura became an American grandmaster last year, eclipsing by a few months Fischer's record of attaining grandmaster status at age 15.

"Basically everything has been a blur," he said.

He is tutored at home by his mother. He said school would take too much time from chess.

His heroes are former chess champion Boris Spassky and Fischer. He said he didn't see himself as the next Fischer, the enigmatic and brilliant player who beat Spassky to win the world title in 1972.

"No, I think I'm a little bit more sane," he said.

Hehe, poor Bobby is a bit weird. Well, he has a mental problem.
But that jail thing was IMHO quite over the top. Sometimes the US just have no consistency at all, "Thou shalt not play chess on this side of the border" There are many people filling the headlines today that should be in jail before Bobby.
I think the US today are not quite understanding 2 things.
1. What Bobby did in 1972 was very very big. This young mastermind knocked down the Sovied chess empire with a crushing defeat.
2. He may have been the best chess player of all times at his peak.

BTW he won his rematch with Spassky. Sad that he had to do it in the wrong place though. Would have been fine to play the game in AFGHANISTAN at the time instead
:D

Why does the US government want to arrest him? What'd he do?
