Mobile Phone In Flight?

I know you can't have your mobile phone or any electronic device on during takeoff and landing, but is it OK to have your mobile phone on during flight?

"The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Wednesday unanimously proposed lifting the ban if issues about safety and technical hurdles can be overcome. FCC  officials said their mandate was to facilitate communications."

Some companies were testing that but no word yet if it was approved by FAA.

The FCC is contemplating it, and will probably allow it.  After that, the next authorization will have to come from the FAA.   If they approve it, then it would be up to each airline to allow it.

I hope they dont allow it. I dont want to sit next to some extrahunk talking at full volume to impress everyone with how important he is, for a long flight.  Let them keep freaking quiet.  Nobody has to talk so dang much they can't wait a couple hours.

when ive been up in planes ive turned mine on only to get the time, (no watch) and could never get a signal with Verizon

AFAIK cell phones don't work reliably above 3000ft. At a typical cruise altitude there's no way they will work. They are talking about allowing cell phone use in planes which have their own base station.

Heh, I don't care to make any calls while in flight, I just want to be able to use the MP3 player in my phone.

Even though the phone is just on, it is still transmitting and receiving, adjusting it's power levels and some other junk.

Yeah, I imagine it'd be transmitting as it tries to find a signal.  I'm just pointing out to the player haters that I ain't interested in talking...just listenin' :)

It might be possible to use just the mp3 player, but good luck trying to explain that to a flight attendant.

Think they have decided that the phones are not a risk on planes or in hospitals. They are allowing them in hospitals here now anyway.

When I turned my pnone on during flight and attempted to make a call, the plane suddenly rolled to the right and began losing altitude, oxygen masks were deployed and the stewardess clawed her way down the aisle and pressed the "end" button saving me, the aircraft, and its passengers... I didn't even get her name...
