The US Navy preferred the 20 mm Hispano for strafing because the 12.7 mm guns tended to jam when firing long bursts. I believe they figured that 1 x 20 mm was as good as 3 x 12.7 mm, but I'm not certain I remember that right, and it might have been 2 x 12.7 mm instead.

The USN considered the Hispano Mk II to have the firepower of roughly three Browning M2 .50 caliber machineguns.

Do you know what the 20mm cannons on the Saab J29 Tunnan where? All I could think were 151/20s but the big article on it in the new International Air Power Review didnt say the type.

They were the m/47c, which was the Swedish designation for the HS.804 - a modifed, Swiss developed version of the good old HS.404 (Hispano) which fired the same 20x110 ammo.

The Swedes also used in different installations at around that time the m/45 and m/49, which were variations on a Bofors short recoil design broadly comparable with the HS.804 and using the same ammo.
