Few people asked me online to post on the forum how to set up the CH Mini Joystick as POV HAT.
1. Make sure your CH software is instealled that is if you go to joystick properties in Windows Controll Panel you get the CH panel.
2. In Aces High go to Setup -> Controls -> Joystick -> Select Joystick.
3. From left side menu select View Pitch. From middle menu select your CH Pro Throttle USB. From right menu select X-axis. Press "Select Input".
4. Repeat point 3 for View Yaw, selecting Y-axis. Press "Select Input". Click OK.
5. Click on "Calibrate Joystick" (yes the one in AH - NOT in Windows). Move your joystick, throttle, pedals all around. Also move your mini joystick to the edge and all around. Click OK. - Please note - calibrating in AH is essencial after selecting input (it was for me).
6. Go back to Select Input. Click on View Yaw/Pitch again and verify that by moving the mini yostick values in X/Y changes. When jostick is centered they should be around 32767. At the top value is around 65535 at min 16383.
7. Go to "Settings" in Joystick submenu. From the drop-down menu select View Yaw and View Pitch and for both of them set both Dead Band and Damping to about 15-20% - it really does help.
8. Jump in to your favorite plane and press F8 to switch to PAN mode.
Now, how this thing operates. It's definitely hard to get used to - much harder than traditional HAT - but it gives much more potential.
First of all, by one switch you controll not only direction but also pitch (angle) of view, where normal HAT gives you only direction.
If you push the joystick forward it moves your head upwards to the 90deg stright up in it's max position. Pulling it back - moves it straight down in to the cocpit.
If you move joystick left/right it will move your view left/right to the back. Now thats a weird situation because there are two ways you can get 6-view (by movig max left OR max right) - and this is confusing.
However I try to compare it to real (your) head movement. You can look back either over your left or right shoulder. IMO this thing gives the viewing bit more realism.
Also because of the smooth (or near smooth) movement, tracking of moving targets is whole lot easier - that is after getting accustomed to this thing.
I still however think that this is not for every one and I'm sure lot of people (especialy those using INSTANT mode) will probably never like it.
Have fun,
