Democrats Win Recount, Court Case in Wash. State

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Seven weeks after 2.8 million people voted to elect a governor for Washington state, the Democratic candidate took the lead by a 10-vote margin in an unprecedented hand recount, election officials said on Wednesday.
Christine Gregoire, who had lost to Republican Dino Rossi in the first two machine recounts, could potentially extend her lead after the state's Supreme Court decided on Wednesday to add more than 700 votes to the final tally.

King County, the largest county that includes Seattle and is a Democratic stronghold, discovered more than 700 ballots that had yet to be counted more than a month after the Nov. 2 election.

Republicans argued in court this week that those ballots were not valid and should not be included in the final tally.

"From day one, this has been about counting every legitimate ballot," Gregoire said in a statement, "The court's unanimous decision is not a boost for me or for Dino Rossi -- it is a victory for the voters."

what is very strange is that they didn't find these votes in the first 2 recounts...and the fact that these newly found votes were not in a secure area, yet the predominently-democrat State Supreme court ruled in favor of the Dems.  Wow, what a surprise! ;)

Its far from over, and regardless of the outcome, either candidate will have just about zero power in their new job as Govenor due to the closeness of the race.

After the Secretary of State certifies the election, which is expected Thursday, any registered voter can sue to challenge the results. Republicans have already begun preparing for possible legal action, and Rossi has repeatedly said he'll keep all his options open.

If the legal fighting does not produce a new governor by the scheduled Jan. 12 inauguration, lame-duck Gov. Gary Locke, a Democrat, may have to stick around. That is because of a provision of the state constitution that says the governor's term of office is four years "and until his successor is elected and qualified."

Locke has made it clear he is not interested in hanging around.

yep... in anything resembling a close election the democrats will use their new tactic of mining votes.   The old tactic of counting dead people was getting a little "tired".

rpm... is their any idea that is too lefty for you?

I'm wondering how the press would be handling this situation if the Republicans had "found" 700 votes that had previously been uncounted... despite 3 counts.

I don't realy care who is elected in Washington, but do find it odd that most accusations of cheating in the elections were aimed toward ensuring the republicans didn't cheat.

I wonder how many uncounted votes would have been found in Ohio if Edwards had gotten his way.

What is funny is when Dino won the first two recounts, (by 42 votes the 2nd recount...) the Dems were telling the press it was a virtual "tie".  Now that their candidate leads by 8, they are saying it is not a tie, and that Dino should concede.  :rofl

Wow, I ask if every legitimate vote should count and suddenly it's a 5-Star Whine-O-Rama from the Republicans. Was the question too hard? I thought it was an easy yes or no question, but nobody gave a straight answer.

What's that post election whine link Flunked? I think you may need to distribute it amongst your brethren.
