Phantom planes?
« on: February 03, 2000, 08:25:00 PM »
Earlier tonight I was flying around 18 looking for targets.  I saw a low dot NE of the base and suspecting it was a c47 I went to take a look.  As I approached the dot it continued to fly straight and level toward the base.  When I finally got very close to it, it went straight up at super high speed then disappeared.  I made a hard turn away and saw another dot heading toward the base.  Again I closed on it, and same as before, it zoomed away straight up.  This time I changed my view and tracked the dot as it zoomed up at about mach 2 or so.  As I passed the spot where it was, I could see it again down near the deck.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Yes. This happens once in a while. You are looking at a "ghost". Seriously! I can't remember the details, but it seems if someone discoes, it sometimes takes the server time to catch up, so it keeps resending the image in a loop pattern (that is, it keeps looping or replaying the final moments).

Either that, or some departed soul is stuck between dimensions searching for eternal peace.

Another oddity is when you're in the tower and someone replanes, you see their icon come zooming in from somewhere, to the runway's end.

Can someone from HTC explain what the deal is exactly with the centre of the map? It has eerie powers, I'm certain of it!   I'm sure you get transported there whenever you die or something...

It's a disco Bloom, happens to me all the time. In previous versions, if I discoed near the base I took off from, I could actually see myself doing this! Hehe, once I had 4 of me logged on, 3 of me in this 'ghost' flight  . I still suffer occasionally form CH ForceFx driver lock up and when I crash while in a 'red out', so you might see my ghost every now and then.

I got discoed 1 time while I was on the runway and when I came back in I could still see myself on the runway. I took off and flew around for a few min till my "ghost" went away.

The strange part was before it went away I could have sworn I saw myself wink at me.

Once, while struggling  to catch up with the rest of my flight of Avenger torpedo bombers, I saw the whole flight disappear from radar right over the mysterious, triangular area in the very center of the map.  Then, my compass started spinning wildly, I lost all instrumentation, and the engine quit.  Very odd...

You don't know "Hacked" until you collide with a "Phantom Plane".  Bad enough to waste lead, but I was foolish enough to ram one once.  Argh!!!  There goes my 4 kill streak.

The center of the map quirk happens for me ussually after I have crashed horribly.

Normally after a crash you go straight to the tower.  IE: You don't "Exit Flight" manually, "The System" does it for you.

If you try to take off immediately, sometimes "The System" forgets to give you a plane and you run "Hell Bent for Leather" to the center of the map.  Check in the hanger, you'll see just a man (no planes) standing there before this happens.

I have tried to load a few bombs up on this trooper, no luck.  Love to be a "Sapper"!

This was well known in early versions of Warbirds but doesnt seem to happen any more. It was common to be flying to a target and see the "souls" of killed pilots speed back to the airfield for "revival" in the tower.

Wonder if its a legacy of HT programming since he was coding Warbirds in those days.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I've seen all of the above things that you have described.  (I even tried to shoot myself down once after I was discoed.   Wouldn't recommend this to anyone, you end up damaging your own plane.)  I've seen the Sr-71 warp drive equipped pilots returning to the tower as well.  I've even seen 1000 mph planes come at me when flying over an enemy base.  Probably the funniest thing I've ever seen was a plane with no wings or tail hanging about 5000ft off the ground.  Everybody that passed it added about 200 rds to the poor lawndart to be.  I suppose a disco is probably to blame in all these cases.
