george h. w. bush being pulled outta the water by the crew of the USS Finback (SS 230) off of chichi-jima..... OR some guy with a bad case of dysentery being helped by concerned crew members.  the cook will swing for this.  OR it's John R. Galvin being rescued by the crew of the USS Harder (SS 257) Commanded by Cdr. Sam Dealy

I think Bush was alone in his raft. The rest of the crew went down with his plane when he bailed.

I thought he ditched.

I know that at least one of his crew died, but I was under the impression that it was due to wounds sustained when the aircraft was hit.


What shot him down anyways?  Does anybody actually know?

He said in an interview a couple of years ago that it was AAA that downed him.

His TBM got hit on the bombrun.  He dropped his bombs and turned out to sea on fire.  One crew member was splattered all over the TBM, the other bailed out and his chute didnt open.

My referance states that the above image is a still from a 16mm film that was shot by Enginering Officer Bill Walsh on the USS Tang, while rescuing downed airmen at Truck, though the above image is not the same as is shown on p.173 in the Book Clear the Bridge, the two are simmilar enough to sugest a frame further along in the film though.
