Went into a jewlery store a few days ago with my brother. He bought a watch for his wife ($4,200). Looking around... I saw the most useless crap. Lelieca glass objects and tacky porcelein miniature statues or whatever. Necklaces, bracelets, Mont Blanc pens. You name it. Came to the conclusion that there is an entire sort of industry geared towards making it possible to spend absurd amounts of money on... well, useless stuff.

I mean... having that kind of money wouldn't be worth it if there was no way you could spend it. So folks figure out a way for them to... et voila! $28,000 shed doors.

I think it is a matter of materialism but there's also something else. Even for lesser than well off people there's a pride in owning something well crafted or at least hand made. $4200 for a watch is WAY TOO MUCH for me, the last expensive watch I had was $128 and it broke when I dropped it (had to take if off because of the stupid metal detector were I worked).

Either way a house like this is wishfull thinking for most.

It is certainly materialism, but some is simply because of who they are and what they do. One of those Aspen compounds, for instance, required a BG check just to visit the site. It was a residence, but in reality, it was a hotel and confrence center for the owner and his guests to conduct business. That is what Dell's home is as well.

For who? Certainly not me, I enjoy gardening, scuba diving, fishing, and being outside during the day. There is a reason the majority of the World's population lives within 50 miles of the coast.

Arizona has quite a bit of agriculture and a very diverse terrain.

I happend to love my time in Arizona.

There is limited duty stations in the Marine Corps and I just happend to get a little town that I've never heard of Yuma, AZ.

When I got their I learned (eventually) why it was called the Best Kept Secret in the Corps.

The people there don't despise having a military base nearby and don't try and take advantage of young servicemen. Arizona weather was great about 9 months out of the year. Yuma itself was cool because you were 15 minutes from a cool mexico border town, 3.5 hours from lake havasu, 3 hours from phoenix, 3 hours from San Diego, 5 hours from Vegas. If you ever wanted to remind yourself why you hate big cities they're not that far away.

The people in Arizon for the most part were very hospitable. The woman sometimes were a little psyco but I think that's every were you go.

I was reminded recently of one of my favorite things about living in the desert........the sunrises. They are stunning!

I think I understand how some people think this sorta thing is a big waste of money, and that the money could go a long way towards feeding the hungry and clothing the poor, etc... But think of this: whoever the guy is that's buying this house has prolly made other people rich along with his own success, and provided many jobs. Some people would prolly feel guilty being that well-off, but I think you should never apologize for your success, assuming it was legitimate. Sorry if I seem to be hijacking the thread. Don't mean to.

I remember distinctly when I went for a walk in Arizona a while back, the red jewels that were scattered in the sand off of one abandoned Gold mine. It was a very pretty place. But it just can't replace the memories I have of the hills of PA.
