That was posted about a year ago.  If you listen, late in the tape, it sounds like you can hear a bit of the FO/FDC traffic (LEFT XX REPEAT).

Those could be mortars going out, or they could be howitzer shells.  In any case, it's HE/QUICK in and WP/QUICK out.

Those guys were:

1. New to the area.

2. Situationally stupid.

3. Lucky they didn't get killed.

Dinger,

The reaction time of the response rounds leads me to believe the outgoing was from local friendly mortars.

Yeah, but there were jump cuts in the video -- it wasn't running without interruption.

And yeah to 1-3.  If someone's adjusting fire with mortars, you don't look and say "gee that's neat"

I was cringing watching that movie with that guy just saying "Damn", then pausing and saying "Damn" again.

The bad guys had gridded nearly everywhere important when it came to mortars. The one thing that probably saved those guys was that they were in a vehicle and nowhere near a gridded location.

The bad guys for the most part weren't really great shots with their various rifles (Chechens and a few others being a major exception) but with RPGs and mortars it was like they all got one of each for their 2nd birthday.

The only thing I can think of is the bad guys decided to take a couple of shots at the vehicle before hitting their intended target (they would try to put some rounds into a compound a minimum of several days a week). But even then they were lucky. The 3rd shot should have been a lot closer to the vehicle by their standards. I saw them put an 82mm round dead center on a temporary casualty collection point of the 10th Mountain Division and the shot had to be at near maximum effective range. Every guy at that collection point must have never skipped out on church because there were no fatalities. Picture 5 or 6 guys standing and ~10 more kneeling or laying down and the round impacts dead center of the group. Everyone had vests and helmets on but the law of averages would have you think that a least a couple would suffer fatal bleeding from fragmentation hits that hit a big artery somewhere. No KIAs though.
