Johnny Depp sounds like a pretty good fit in Wonka. He's a great actor and more versatile than Wilder. Steve Martin has become a much better actor than he was, but a long way from great. He's no Peter Sellers, but then who ever will be?
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

I expect Depp will do and even better job than Wilder, plus he doesn't have that anoying curly hair.  I agree that no one could possibly match Sellers; but Martin is pretty funny and should do a good enough job to make it worth watching.

Agreed.
I hate when they remake great movies as typically they never get it right and never matches the quality of the originals. And they only end up ruining them in the process
And often it is the original actors that made the movie.
Panther I suspect will be one of them.

Also in this catagory I'd haveto include
Mr Deeds comes to town Dr Dolittle
Moby Dick
KING KONG

And a host of others whose names escape me at the moment. But all of which I would rather pay full price at a theater to see the originals then watch the remakes for free.

They should leave the classics alone

Other movies probably should never have been made to begin with
Willy Wonka is probably one of them.
Hated the story and never saw Wilder as anything resembling a talent
Any of his roles could have been better done with a different actor
Plus he has that annoying blond curly hair
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
It ain't pretty

sorry, but part of the greatness of wilder, and willy wonka is that crazy evil people should have curly hair. it makes the role more "psycho"

ever hear the term "psycho red head"? i SWEAR that is true, especially with women, but i digress

willy scared me as a kid as he was designed to be a scary guy. that movie is a classic, and they'd do as well to remake the wizard of oz....

Johnny Depp, i really appreciate his acting, mostly from the smaller movies, gilbert grape, ed wood, stuff like that. can he do a good job in this movie? probably the best anyone can do, but thats like asking should nick cage play superman. some questions just shouldnt be asked IMHO
I don't know what to put here yet.

Perhaps sometimes, but Gene Wilder's hair has that Richard Simons wuss factor to it.  Crazy is good, but I just can't buy a crazy wuss.

I think they both look like child molesters.

Willy Wonka sure does seem like a child molesting type. He's got lots of candy, loves the children, and threatens them with "dire consequences" if they eat his candy... and they all disappear as they fail to follow instructions. Hmmmm.

Depp just pulls off that aspect of Willy Wonka better than Gene.

totally demented ,,, I myself dont think tim burton /johhny depp did wonka any justice at all . I 1st saw the original wonka in the theater when i was a kid , It may have been scary at times but it is a great movie .  Shure Deep is a good actor and i like alot of his stuff , but id rather see him in a original role .

Did you see the preview of the Pink Panther yet?  They have it on Moviefone.com.  Actually looks pretty good, I was chuckling at the preview.  I'm a little upset they had to put Beyonce in the movie.  Seems like if you have someone do music for a movie anymore, they want their face on the screen.  I'm not sure if it's a marketing ploy to help sell the soundtrack or if it's just supposed to be a career booster for her, but they should have spent the money to get a real actress.
