I'm running an Radeon 9800 XT with driver version 6.14.10.6490, 26 Oct 2004 and noticed the same thing just a night or two ago.  I was a at a base just to the SSE of V6 and V7 and saw this.  I spawned in a panzer and went to move north and the trees looked dead.

I asked when I was driving by it and a few others said they saw it too. It was only one isolated patch I saw. First time I ever saw it. And I havnt updated my nvidia driver in a couple of months.
