Wingman :) WTG !!!
« on: January 20, 2000, 04:39:00 PM »
WOW !
Flew tonigh, and was invited by Lephturn to be his wingman (there is a feature in the DOT command that will enable you to do just that, I will explain at the end of this post for the newbies like me...)

We both flew the F4U, went pretty high for the 1st time (20K) and he gave me more than a couple of tips on how to master the "HOG" and what way you are to engage with it...

I tested just that on our 1st pass over a highly busy runway, I got in straight down, got behind a 109 and as he was in a high angle, I took a blind shot (he was at d4 right under my hood, and I prayed that he didn't turn...). Quickly stabilised after a 2second shot as I saw another 109 that was in my 6 at d8 and spraying me...

(it was only later that lephturn told me that I had the kill, I was to busy watching that back-109 to read the chat-thingie...)

Dammit, that 109 was spraying me, and I was trying to get some speed to separate us while using both rudder and roling (just  bit) to avoid being a static tgt...

8,9,1k,1.1k,...I was getting to it, and at about 1.8k he left me alone...

I then climbed back, and turned 90' to the runnway, but had lost visual on my wingie
We rejoined at 10K feet and began circling...Lephturn began to descend and I stayed up to look after him, but (my mistake) took a too great separation with him...he was soon engaged by a 109 and a Spit, I called in (or should I say SCREAMED :eek : ) 66666666666 !!!! But it was too late...I was alone up there

Revenge in mind, I got down over the 109 that had downed my "buddy" and didn't go for his 6, but, maintained a high aspect on him, LOL   .....that when the fun came in....I turned in on him, and beamed down.......a bit too much ! 90' to the ground at 3K feet....do I have to tell the rest of the story ?

We came back in a couple of times, and while I was omw to the furball, I could see lot's O "Lephturn shot down XXX....   ". I didn't get as successfull as the 1st time anymore, but I learned a great deal on how to use the BnZ technique (it's only the pulling up part I still have trouble with, LOL !)

Thanks Lephturn for that great sortie !!! Hope to see you back up there soon !

Now, the WINGMAN DOT COMMAND
Let's say you have your buddy called "Groundhog" online, type in the radio : .wingman groundhog

From now on, his Icon will appear in white to you (easyer to see!!!), and this works for the map as well, you will see a white dot in there, it's him !

NEXT STEP
Get the map up, go to Roster, and click on "groundhog" , then click on "tune to"...from now on, everything you will type in channel 1 will appear white to him...

Don't forget that "groundhog" will have to do the same with you.

Now, just a quick word...
before Lephturn was in there with me, I was flying with the Italian boys (Salute amicci!!!) and we had a good laugh : I ran out of fuel just above the enemy runway, and was sliding down...I saw a NIIICE RED B17....

Went for him, glided down (he was at 2K, and me at 10K+)...got on top of him, beamed down, and got the kill
From now on, they will call me KAMIKASE SAINTAW, LOL !!!

Good night all !

Great story Saint

Winging is definately the way to go here.  Its alot better having an extra couple sets of eyes scanning the skies for enemy as well as watching your back.

For those who dont know, you can actually talk to your wingman(men) using a free piece of software called Roger Wilco.  Imagine the excitement during the heat of a furball calling out "XXXX spit 6!" It really adds to the excitement.

Once you find a group of guys you are comfortable with, you are a force to reckon with!  Aint that right Torque, Moss, Terne, and my 33rd Brethren!

Hehehe, that was a blast.    Thanks for that Saintaw, I had great fun.

FYI, the reason I dove into that mess with too little E on the first sortie was that one of my squad mates was in the fray.  I saw a 109 trailing Vila so I dove in.  I kilt the 109, but blew my E to do it and got et.  I didn't have enough gas to make it back anyway. <G>  I managed to ditch it with 6 kills, so I can't complain about that.

Vila was a machine next sortie, watched him rack up a 10 kill and rtb safe in his P51.  If any of you Pony drivers want some tips.. follow along with Vila.

Yep, winging is definately the way to go.  If you are BnZing a furball (as we were) the wingman can follow the lead trailing a bit, say 1k.  Much of the time a target will break and avoid the lead's attack... only to make himself a big fat target for his wingman.    A wingman is a force multiplier.  I remember back in my WB days when the P47 first came out.  I winged up with Worr and Vila a couple times... and wow.  Everybody treated the P47D as a target early on, and were they ever surprised when a handful of them started kicking them around. <G>  Alone the P47 is in trouble unless it has an E advantage.. and a big one.  But in a group... man look out.

The F4U works that way to a degree now, in that many pilots in the arena under-estimate it.  With more than one around, under-estimating a Hawg driver is really dangerous.
