gunnery practice
« on: December 30, 2004, 05:35:19 AM »
Ive been at this game a few months now, and i think i have an at least half decent command of my aircraft in most situations. but i still have one very big weakness. my gunnery. i cant seem to hit anything, even when its dangling in front of my guns....at least when fighting a 'real' pilot. Shooting the drones offline is no prob.

Any pointers on how to practice aim?

PS: Ive been flying with tracers off for a while now. didnt seem to help much...

PPS: I have convergence at around 200 on most planes, and shoot to kill at d200 (max d400).

Not really for practicing but as a tip for deflection shooting-  try firing pulling twice the amount of lead you think you need.   It worked for me when i first started out.
"Willy's gone and made another,
Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

schatzi,

Come to the TA with a partner, turn your tracers on, and let your buddy tell you where your bullets are going. You can get instant feedback on each burst like this.

As your accuracy increases, have your buddy increase the severity of his maneuvers.

Don't forget to turn your tracers back off!

Practise practise & more practise!

Partly depends on what you fly. IE its easier to get hits in MG armed planes, but its easier (IMO) to get kills with cannon.

Next, if you are flying with cannon try setting them 50 longer than the mg's.
This should help get them both into the target, esp at ranges over 250.

Check your fire with the .target 300 command. This brings up a bullseye. (Its always North of you) Lets you see what kind of dispersion your getting, etc.

Range on target is in meters, make it go away or reset with .target 0.

Kind of like shooting Geese, start with crosshairs right on target, pull through in the direction he's traveling as you fire. Longer bursts at first till you start seeing when it is your hitting.  But until your hitting almost every burst don't worry about the ammo.

Question about distance convergence...and YES...you can call me a DOLT for NOT knowing this:
setting ammo rounds to d650 refers to yards? feet? meters? I've always assumed yards but since Ghosth mentioned the target distance factor as being measured in meters, I thought I'd better ask.

Thanks ~

IMO

The range is in yards.

1 yard = 0.914 meter

***Warning The Suggested Activity Below Can Get Boring***

                                 But It Works!!!!!

Use the lead computing gun sight in off line mode. Also setup the arena for max ammo which gives you around 45K cannon rounds in an LA7. Spend an hour a day attacking the drones from every angle you can think of. In 30 days your brain will do auto computing in the MA. It's best to stick with one ride during this 30 days.

I did this second to the last tour at the end of AH1 to get my hit % up to 6 from 3 by the last AH1 tour. I havent had the time to do it again for AH2, and it can get boring. My hit % is down to 3 again.

There is a point in this game during the opening manuvers with an opponent that a well placed snap shot will end the engagement and you won't need to have shane's mastery of ACM to win. HO's not included. Eventually you will notice in the MA that your lead and snap shots have been started too late and aimed too low.

Remember: Net lag along with differences between yours and your apponents connection states will give you different shooting results online vs. offline.

But this is what I did to improve my hit % in 30 days.

Thanks for all the tips. Ill go practice more... :)

As for planes, i fly mostly HurriIIc and SpitV. On Spit i never fire canons and 303 at the same time (i only hit with 303 when i do that). I use 303 for 'spooking' at long range, or when out of hispanos ;).

Since i now have a new comp and do not have to play at 15 fps/800x600/sliders full performance (Wow - this game looks GREAT!), ill see if a little less stuttering and warping helps improve my shooting.

Bustr, how do i change ammo setup for offline arena?

When you are sitting in the tower offline you should have a button for arena setup, or first go to setup then a choice for arena. I'm at work and trying to do this off the top of my head. Anyway once you get into the arena setup, the same place where you enable the lead comp gunsight, look at all the listings concerning ammo. There will be I think 3 that will let you increase a multiplyer by either 10 or 10k. Those take care of all the ammo loads for all things that fly, crawl, or swim that you can man and shoot from. Hope this is enough to help you look around and find it. I only had to set it up once. :)

When you first upped in a plane after you set the flag, did you see a host message saying the arena flag had been reset to some number like 178 or 250 or something? If not it meant you did not hit save or apply after you set the flag. Also you have to hit the tab key if this is the very first time ever using it in your offline mode.

Bustr,

Thanks...just hit the tab key....it selected a plane...now is that lead computing sight only for that plane....aka you can use it against a point on the ground that is not a GV or such....so you could just fly around and shoot at ground objects?

Thanks

Use tab for each enemy plane you change to or select after you killed the last one. It's only for planes. Go back in and enable the precision bomb site. This acts as a lead computing sight for jabbo from fighters. Bombs and rockets. Straffing ground targets just takes a littel practice. It's more forgiving since buildings can't run away.
